The community is invited to a reunion and celebration of Central High School, a former Orange County school for black children in grades 1-12. The school graduated its first class in 1938 and its last class in 1968. It merged in 1968 with Orange High School. The campus now houses the year-round Hillsborough Elementary School.
Following is the schedule of events for the three-day celebration:
- Friday, May 23, 6:15 p.m. at Hillsborough Elementary School gym, 402 N. Nash St. -- Alumni basketball game, complete with alumni marching band and cheerleaders. Women's game begins at 7 p.m. Men's game begins at 8 p.m. Pre-game festivities by students of Hillsborough and Central elementary schools will begin at 6:15 p.m.
- Saturday, May 24, 10 a.m. in downtown Hillsborough -- Parade featuring Central High School alumni and their reformed marching band and cheerleading and basketball teams. The parade also will feature current Hillsborough and Central elementary students and others in the community.
- Saturday, May 24, noon to 4 p.m. at Hillsborough Elementary campus -- Festivities on the field, including maypole wrapping, music, alumni softball game, storytelling and food and crafts vendors. Photos and memorabilia showcasing Central High School's history will be on display near the Hillsborough Elementary School office. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
- Saturday, May 24, 8 p.m. to midnight at Hillsborough Elementary gym -- Semi-formal prom with live band. Dances will include the bump, the mashed potato and the cha-cha. Cost is $25 per person.
- Sunday, May 25, 3 p.m. at Mount Bright Missionary Baptist Church, 211 W. Union St. -- Worship service, to include recognition of teachers and classes.
All activities are open to the public, and all activities are free, except for the prom.
Shuttle transportation for the parade and afternoon festivities will be provided about every 15 minutes beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Stops will be the parking lot of the former Wal-Mart on Churton Street; the corner of Churton and King streets; and the Maxway parking lot on Churton Street near U.S. 70.
Women still are being recruited to play on the women's basketball teams. They can be from the general community. Contact Thomas Watson at 732-2471 to play or for more information on the three-day celebration.
