Dr. Joseph M. Garfunkel and Mrs. Jerry Garfunkel celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 16.

They were married on April 16, 1949.

Lawrence and Laurestine Gerald of Alexandria, Va., announce the engagement of their daughter, LaToya Monique Gerald, to Alexander Conrad Wharton, son of Mayor AC and Ruby Wharton, of Memphis, Tenn.

The bride-elect is a graduate of Hampton University, where she obtained her bachelor's degree in marketing. She continued to pursue her education at Campbell University, where she received her master's degree in business administration. She is currently working as an account executive in Chapel Hill.

The groom-elect is also a graduate of Hampton University, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in aviation management. He later graduated from the University of Chapel Hill's School of Law. He is currently working as an attorney in Raleigh.

The wedding ceremony is planned for May 30, 2009, at Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va.
