Fun blooms in April at the senior centers
Here is a brief summary of some of the events and classes offered at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center in Chapel Hill (968-2070) and the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough (245-2015) in April. Consult The Senior Times, or call the centers, for more information.•Blood Drive: There will be a blood drive at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7. See The Senior Times for detailed information.•Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is a free interactive six-week course to help people with chronic diseases. It covers a variety of topics, and is designed to enhance your disease treatment. It will meet Tuesdays, April 14-May 19 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Central Orange Senior Center. Call Myra Austin, wellness coordinator, for more information at 968-2073.•Diabetes Education Classes: You don't have to be diabetic to take part in this free class, which will address different topics using numerous presenters. It'll meet at the Central Orange Senior Center from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, April 23-May 28. Call 245-2015 by April 16 to register.•Come and update your bridge knowledge and skills at the Defense-Heart Series course April 23-June 18 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.•The Town Treasures exhibit is at the Seymour Center, which is photographs and recollections honoring 12 couples or individuals who have guided, ministered, taught, and led Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Chapel Hill native and professional photographer Catharine Carter captured their faces, and local writers compiled their favorite community memories as well as changes they've witnessed. A public reception will be held on April 16 at 4 p.m. Co-sponsored with the Friends of the Seymour Center.•Also on April 16 at 2:30 p.m., the Village Elders will be hosting Howard Lee, director of the N.C. State Board of Education, and Chapel Hill's first elected black mayor, as he speaks on "The Courage to Lead: One Man's Journey in Public Service." Come and attend both events.•Married or single, "Discovering New Relationships in Mid and Later Life: A Forum" is for you. On April 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Seymour Center there will be a lively and provocative panel discussion about establishing new relationships and reinvigorating current ones.•A variety of art classes begin in April during the day, and in the evening. Check The Senior Times for a complete listing.•Seniors on the Road offers wonderful overnight and day trips. From June 14 to June 20 there's a trip to the Show Capital of the World, Branson, Mo. Call Cydnee Sims at 969-3025 for information and to register.•Here are some upcoming day trips: Tuesday, April 7: Big Bloomers Garden Center in Sanford for a wide variety of quality, reasonably priced annuals, perennials and yard art. April 14: Duke Gardens for its magnificent blooms, with lunch at Rick's Diner. All the trips have a transportation fee of $5. Call 245-2015 to register.•Saturday, April 25 bring an extended day trip to the Wings Over Wayne Air Show in Goldsboro. Performances by the Thunder Birds, Golden Knights, Tora! Tora! Tora! and the F15 E Demo Squadron. Trip cost is $35. Call 969-3025 for availability.•The Friends of the Seymour Center presents "Jazz Saxophones" today at 3 p.m. This is part of their Sunday Afternoons at the Seymour Center Series.
