Photographer and videographer Cam Carrithers spent several weeks with Marty Ravellette for a photography project while Carrithers was a student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC. Ravellette, who was born without arms, was a landscaper for many years in and around Chapel Hill. He made national news in 1998 after he rescued a woman from a burning van at U.S. 15-501, but he was a familiar figure around here for years, eating breakfast at Sutton's Drugstore, pushing his lawnmower and fishing in local lakes. Ravellette died in an automobile accident on Monday at the age of 67. Carrithers came into The Chapel Hill News office a few days later and offered to share some of the images that captured Ravellette the way many local residents will remember him.Carrithers is a freelance photo and videojournalist who lives in Chapel Hill. He has covered stories for many major newspapers, magazines and production companies and has received more than a dozen industry awards. His career started after he graduated the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and interned for National Geographic Adventure.
