Helen Crompton, a teacher at Carrboro Elementary School, is the national winner of the 2009 International Educator of the Year Award presented by The Visiting International Faculty Program.
In three years at Carrboro Elementary, Crompton, a visiting teacher from the U.K., has served as a grade-level team leader and has created memorable cultural events for her students. She also has brought new technology to her classroom, such as a history lesson in which her students used Skype to hold a video conference with a war veteran.
Crompton did all of this while earning her master's degree, speaking at conferences, writing an article about integrating technology into math curriculum for a national education magazine, and occasionally dressing up as Queen Elizabeth I for class lessons.
The Visiting International Faculty Program honored 16 of its visiting exchange teachers in the 2009 International Educator of the Year awards program.
Rachel Leeman-Munk, an Earlham College first-year and daughter of Jennifer Leeman and Tom Munk of Carrboro, performed in Earlham's Pictures at an Exhibition concert on April 4 in Goddard Auditorium.
Leeman-Munk is a member of the Earlham Orchestra.
Arnav Tripathy, a sophomore at Harvard University, formerly from East Chapel Hill High School, has been declared a Putnam Fellow by placing in the top five of the 2008 Putnam Mathematics Competition.
Tripathy was also a Putnam Fellow last year, in his freshman year at Harvard.
During his high school years at East Chapel Hill High, he was selected to represent the U.S at the International Mathematics Olympiad in 2006 and 2007, winning a gold in 2006 and a silver in 2007.
He is featured in a new Mathematical Association of America documentary, "Hard Problems, The Road To The World's Toughest Math Contest."
Ariel Brestin of Chapel Hill will graduate from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) North Central Region on July 30. The ceremony will mark the end of a 10-month journey that began in July 2008 with the opening of the new NCCC campus in Vinton, Iowa.
Brestin is one of 125 AmeriCorps NCCC members and team leaders who left their mark on the communities they served in.
During their term of service, members and team leaders worked in teams of 10 to 12 and were deployed across the North Central Region states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Thirteen NCCC teams provided much needed support to the residents of the Midwest devastated by the floods of 2008-'09 and the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, through work with FEMA, the American Red Cross and other grassroots organizations.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Noah T. Blach graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
He is the son of Ralph Blach of Chapel Hill and is a 2007 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
The following students recently served as pages in the North Carolina Senate: Christine Seon Rheem, daughter of Sungsue and Younghee Rheem of Chapel Hill; James Alexander Emmerman, son of Scott and Kathy Emmerman of Chapel Hill; and Kaela Rose Cogswell, daughter of John and Patricia Cogswell of Carrboro.
Statewide high school students in grades 9 through 12 serve as pages when the General Assembly is in session.
Thomas Liu of Chapel Hill received a bachelor of science degree magna cum laude in psychology and a bachelor of science degree magna cum laude in biological sciences during fall commencement ceremonies at Virginia Tech.
Jonathan Spaulding received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering degree during fall commencement ceremonies at Virginia Tech.
