Karishma Desai, a rising sophomore at East Chapl Hill High School, performed her Bharathanatyam arangetram on July 18.
An arangetram is essentially a graduation ceremony, marking the completion of a student's initial training and her blossoming into a dancer. Karishma is a student of Karanataka Kalashree Smt. Supriya Desai, a celebrated dance teacher and choreographer in the Triangle area. Karishma performed a total of eight dances spanning three hours.
Her arangetram was held at Chapel Hill High School, and was attended by 350 people. Karishma's focus is in the Tanjore style of Bharatnatyam, which she has been studying for the past seven years. Bharatnatyam is a 2,000 year old dance form from southern India, which was originally used as a method of worship. Contemporary Bharatnatyam is primarily used as a medium of communication and a performance art, though it still retains its devotional character. Every arangetram is comprised of seven basic dances, which are mandatory for the student to perform in order to graduate. Karishma also performed an additional dance piece to a song written by her grandmother.
