Renowned potter Mark Hewitt will hold one of his popular kiln openings this weekend at his studio near Pittsboro, featuring hundreds of pots decorated with a new luminescent granite glaze made from locally mined "Chapel Hill gravel." "Everyone knows the tan colored gravel on pathways around the area, but not many people know how beautiful it is when you melt it at 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit," he said. The opening will offer a full range of pottery, small and large, including mugs, bowls, jars, bud vases, planters, pitchers and more. The event will be held at 424 Johnny Burke Road, Pittsboro, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. On Oct. 7, by the way, Hewitt will be featured in a nationwide broadcast of a new episode of the PBS TV series, "Craft in America." 542-2371,
