CHAPEL HILL -- The North Carolina Sierra Club endorsed incumbent state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird and the other incumbents in local state House and Senate races, it announced Tuesday.

Kinnaird, a Carrboro Democrat, faces primary opposition from Orange County Commissioner Moses Carey Jr.

In the Orange County commissioners race, the club endorsed at-large candidate Bernadette Pelissier, the former chairwoman of the Sierra Club's Orange-Chatham Group. She is opposed by Neloa Jones and Mary Wolff.

In District 1, the group endorsed Pam Hemminger and incumbent Valerie Foushee, who do not face primary opponents and are all but assured of seats on the board.

The group didn't endorse any candidates from District 2, saying none had sufficiently strong positions, but said it supported Leo Allison's views on transportation, farmland preservation and other issues.

The group also endorsed House Speaker Joe Hackney and Rep. Verla Insko, both running unopposed.
