Tyson to preach final sermon at Amity

The Rev. Vernon Tyson will preach his final sermon at Amity United Methodist Church, 825 Estes Drive, on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Tyson has served as the interim pastor at Amity for six months. The congregation will celebrate his ministry with a farewell cookout following the service. All are invited.

Amity is an inclusive congregation that believes all are neighbors. Everyone is invited to join the congregation Sundays at 9:45 a.m. for Sunday school for all ages and at 11 a.m. for worship, including children’s time and children’s church.

Amity offers Bible study classes for children and adults. Children are studying the Way of the Child curriculum on Sundays at 9:45 a.m.

Two Sunday classes are offered for adults, “God, the People and the Covenant, Chronicles, Daniel, Nehemiah, Ezra, & Haggai” and “Images of Christ.”

Bible study also is offered on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in a private home. The current class is “Changes that Heal: How to Understand Your Past to Ensure a Healthier Future.” Call for directions.

Recovery class starts at New Salem

A class for people struggling with alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, sexual addiction, codependence, drug addiction, domestic violence, food addiction, gambling addiction or other dependence problems will begin Monday at 6:30 p.m. at New Salem Church, 5030 Old Graham Road, Pittsboro.

There is no charge, and everyone is invited.

Lystra Baptist program provides clothing

Lystra Baptist Church, 686 Lystra Road in Chatham County, has started an outreach ministry to help clothe those in need.

The Take and Wear Clothes Closet provides clothing free of charge to Chatham County residents in need. People who use the service must be referred by the Take and Eat food pantry at Evergreen Church, CORA, Social Services, local churches or other approved agencies.

The program relies solely on donations from individuals, churches and organizations. Donations are welcome.

Mount Zion hosts Men’s Day event

Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 530 Lystra Road, will host its Second Annual Men’s Day Conference on Saturday.

The conference will begin with a breakfast at 8 a.m. The Rev. Sir Walter Mack, pastor of Union Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, will serve as facilitator.

Services, events at Chapel of the Cross

Services of Holy Eucharist at the Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., will be held Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.

There will also be a service of Holy Eucharist at 4 p.m. at Carol Woods Retirement Center. This service is open to all members of the Chapel Hill community and not limited to residents of Carol Woods.

Brief services of Evening Prayer will be held in the chapel Monday and Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the parish house.

A series of lectures recorded by UNC professor Bart Erhman centered on St. Paul and his interpretation of Jesus’ ministry will be viewed and discussed during potluck dinners today and June 25 and July 2 at 6:30 p.m. For information, contact Linda Everhart at leverhart@hotmail.com.

Dinner on the Grounds is scheduled for Sunday following the 10 a.m. service. Participants are asked to bring a dish of picnic food to share. A mission fair will be held during the dinner. Services, events at the Advocate

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate celebrates Holy Eucharist each Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, 1200 Mason Farm Road. A fellowship hour follows the service.

Other activities include a moms-and-tots get-together on Wednesdays; Theology on Deck, a series of lively theological discussions; and Alternative, an inclusive Christian fellowship group for graduate students and young adults (ages 22-35) in the Chapel Hill area.

Chorus concert to benefit IFC Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, will hold Souper Summer Supper, an intergenerational meal and fellowship, today at 5:45 p.m. Cost is $5. Call the church office at 942-4964 to register.

The Benzie Community Chorus will perform a benefit concert for the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service on Sunday at Binkley. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15.

The Benzie Community Chorus is celebrating its 27th year. The summer tour features Broadway and gospel music. Among the members of the chorus are former Chapel Hill residents Steve and Jeannine Chapman, who were members of the choir at United Church of Chapel Hill.

The Benzie Chorus selects a charitable organization in each community as the recipient of the performance revenues. For this concert, the IFC has been selected. The tour is privately funded with no fees, allowing 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit the IFC.

Advent Lutheran holds Bible classes, services

Buddhist center offers teaching

The Kosala Buddhist Center in Carrboro offers Buddhist teachings, discussion and meditation with resident teacher Gen Tilopa every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The June series focuses on “The Kadampa Buddhist way of Life.”

Cost is $10. First class is free for newcomers.

Services, events at United Church

Sunday worship services at the United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., are at 8:45 and 11 a.m.

New members will join United Church at the 11 a.m. service.

Iglesia Unida, Spanish language worship, meets on Sundays at 11 a.m. in the new Assembly Hall in the west wing of the building.

The church softball team will play St. Paul’s AME today at 3:10 p.m. on Field 2.

The Triangle Gay Men’s Chorus will present their program, “Sands of Time,” at United Church on Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door or online at tgmchorus.org.

On Saturday, United Church of Chapel Hill will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Covenant Place, a partnership that built 40 apartments for seniors. Rep. David Price, state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird and Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton will among the attendees at the 11 a.m. ceremony.

Sermon Shaping meetings are held on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. in the library. One of the pastors leads a small group in looking at the lectionary texts for the next Sunday.

Services, events at Unity Center

Sunday services at the Unity Center of Peace Church, 8800 Seawell School Road, are from 11 a.m. to noon. The Adult Forum precedes the service each Sunday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

Mark Malachi facilitates Jewish Erev Shabbat services on the last Friday of each month. The service begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes chanting, Hebrew prayers and music.

A healing circle meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
