CHAPEL HILL -- A man jumped from the third story of the Top of the Hill restaurant Tuesday afternoon, June 24.

His fall was broken by an awning over the former Sunglass Hut shop, but he landed on his head and was quickly transported to UNC Hospitals.

Witnesses saw the man jump off the outdoor dining balcony about 4:20 p.m.

One witness, William Bowling, was shaken by the incident.

"I'm up here (on Franklin Street) every single day, and this is like the last time I'm going to be up here for a while," he said.

The man was conscious before being taken to the hospital, witnesses said.

Top of the Hill is at the corner of Franklin and Columbia streets downtown.

No additional details were available Tuesday.
