As part of the annual regional Transportation Demand Management Kick Gas Celebration, three groups received recognition for outstanding service in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro communities.
The Town of Chapel Hill presented the awards to recognize efforts to decrease single occupancy vehicle usage and increase healthy lifestyles.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce received the 2008 Go Chapel Hill Business Involvement Kick Gas Award.
The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership received the 2008 Go Chapel Hill Business Promotions Kick Gas Award.
The ReCYCLEry-Blue Urban Bikes received the 2008 Go Chapel Hill Community Cycling Kick Gas Award.
Other area agencies were recognized for their efforts in using and promoting alternative commute modes of transportation.
The awards recognized agencies and individuals that make a significant difference in reducing the carbon footprint left from single occupancy vehicle travel. A report for the 2008 Smart Commute
Challenge noted that more than 12,300 participants from the area committed to commuting at least once in a six-week period with something other than single occupancy vehicles.
