- A West Main Street resident reported an assault to police on Monday. According to a police report, she said she was sitting on her back porch when her neighbor began cursing and spouting "unintelligible phrases," then threw cat food and water on her. The woman did not wish to press charges.
- Police were called to Barnes Street Monday when a man was spotted climbing out the window of a residence. According to a police report, an officer tracked down the suspect, who insisted the residence belonged to his uncle and he was staying there. The suspect stated that he didn't have a key but had forgotten his lunch, so he had climbed in and out through the window to retrieve it. Police were unable to find any items stolen or damaged in the home, and eventually found the suspect was indeed the current tenant's nephew. He was advised to obtain an additional key.
- Mary Clayton Liles Overman, 27, of 901 W. Sixth St. in Siler City was arrested Wednesday at her home and charged with driving while impaired and driving with a suspended license. She was released on a written promise to appear in court.
- James Freeman Hill, 23, of 932 Country Club Drive in Fayetteville, was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana. According to a police report, Hill was pulled over for not pulling to the right for an EMS unit with its siren and lights flashing. Police reported that they found a stash of marijuana in the vehicle and then seized Hill's cell phone.
- A Long Meadows Road resident contacted police last week to ask them to take away a sick opossum that was lying in her garage. Police arrived and impounded the animal, but it died in route to the shelter.
- Two break-ins were reported last week from adjacent, vacant Sarita Lane homes, where several kitchen appliances were taken.
- A vehicle break-in was reported on Jones Ferry Road, where a 9 mm handgun was reportedly taken from a Carrboro man's glove box.
CHAPEL HILL
- John Thomas Whitfield, 29, of 913 Shady Lawn Extension A, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with driving while impaired. According to police reports, Whitfield tried to turn left onto Umstead Drive near Green Street at an "extremely high rate of speed," but he left the roadway and traveled about 50 feet before striking a utility pole, flipping his car 180 degrees.
- There was a passenger in the car, and both Whitfield and the passenger were taken to UNC Hospitals. Whitfield registered a 0.13 blood-alcohol level (the state standard is 0.08) and was released from police custody on a written promise to appear in court.
- Joseph Lamont Brown, 28, of Estes Park Apartments M7, and Justin Lee Noell, 19, of Rocky Brook Mobile Home Park 16, were arrested Tuesday at the intersection of Rosemary and Graham streets after police said they were found in possession of crack cocaine. According to police reports, Brown had the substance packaged for sale and was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, while Noell was charged with felonious possession and carrying a concealed weapon, a switchblade knife. Each was held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
- Charles Bradley Fitch, 28, of 134 Milton Ave., was arrested Tuesday night and charged with driving while impaired and failure to report an accident. According to police reports, Fitch was traveling north on U.S. 15-501 and drove onto the median near Cleland Drive, where he struck a road sign. Police pulled him over at Ridgefield Road about a mile away, where he registered a 0.14 blood-alcohol level. Fitch was released on a written promise to appear in court.
- Jeffrey Reid Betterton, 34, of 1001 Weaver Dairy Road 23, was arrested at his home Wednesday morning and charged with assault on a female and resisting arrest. He was held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
- Two different Chapel Hill residents reported that firearms were stolen from their homes this week. One man told police Thursday that someone broke into his Honeysuckle Road home and stole a 38 mm firearm, in addition to other items.
- Meanwhile, a second man reported Thursday that his 25 mm weapon was missing, but he told police he wasn't sure when in the last two years it was taken since he primarily resides in Hillsborough.
- The Graham Street Market was reportedly hit with an armed robbery on Thursday. According to a police report, an attendant at the store told police someone robbed the store at gunpoint, taking $80 in cash.
- Home break-ins were reported last week on Milton Avenue, Stateside Drive, Colony Woods Drive, White Plains Road, Shady Lawn Road Extension, at Kingswood Apartments on N.C. 54 and three times on Ephesus Church Road. Vehicle break-ins were reported at the N.C. 54 park and ride lot, twice at the Friday Center Lot and twice at Eastgate Shopping Center, while vandalized vehicles were reported on Weaver Dairy Road, East Franklin Street and Barbee Chapel Road.
