Trevor P. Thornton of Pittsboro, an English teacher at Christ School in Asheville and a graduate of UNC and Woodberry Forest School, will spend six weeks this summer at Oxford University as a Bread Loaf Scholar.

Rhodes Scholarship winners Aisha Ihab Saad and Elisabeth "Lisette" Yorke of UNC have been selected as members of USA Today's 2009 All-USA College Academic First Team.

Brian E. Moore of Chapel Hill received The Nelson E. Sartoris Award from the Chemistry Department at Wittenberg University's annual Honors Convocation. The Nelson E. Sartoris Award is given to the outstanding senior chemistry major.

Army Pvt. Shelton E. Seward graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Shirley Seward of Hillsborough.

Chapel Hill-area middle school students Joseph Sharp, Matthew Kornberg, Daniel Royer and Bryan Campbell earned first place honors in the North Carolina Science Olympiad State Tournament.

Redmond Grigg, District Technology Student Association coordinator at McDougle Middle School, recently received the Program Excellence Award from the International Technology Educators Association. The award is one of the highest honors given to Technology Education classroom teachers at the elementary, middle or high school levels.

Melissa Golding, daughter of Toni and Tom Golding, and Rebecca Mark, daughter of Lee and Daniel Mark of Chapel Hill, graduated this spring from Saint Mary's School in Raleigh.

Daniel David Lord Mertus, grandson of Marilyn Mertus of Chapel Hill, was honored this spring for his superior performance in the academic Talent Search organized by the Center for Talent Youth at Johns Hopkins University.

Caroline Childs, a student at East Chapel Hill High School, has been invited to attend the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation July 12-25 on the campus of Duke University. Caroline is the Daughter of Scott and Tresa Childs.

Richard (Neill) Bullock and Adam Mincey have been chosen to receive the first scholarships sponsored by Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation.

Bullock is the son of Walter and Rebecca Bullock of Hillsborough. Mincey, a recent Orange High School graduate in Hillsborough, is the son of Nick and Kendall Mincey of Hurdle Mills

Lisa Barroilhet, Peter Steenland, Jennifer Reece Hartz, Megan Fuller and Charles Ebert were honored with the distinguished 2009 Robert C. Cefalo House Officer Award by UNC Health Care.

Brian P. Goldstein, UNC Health Care's chief of staff, presented the awards.

Regina Frances Parker of Chapel Hill has been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award, the second highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
