Make shelter move transparent

The IFC and the town have failed to provide adequate transparency into the process to relocate the men's shelter. Furthermore, the article in the Oct. 25 Chapel Hill News leads to many new questions about why Mayor Foy, the IFC and UNC chose the proposed site.

The last paragraph sums up the IFC's decision: "The University is making this extraordinary gift, which I don't think we can ever get again. I can only draw one conclusion from this statement: this decision was not based on any of the site selection criteria Mr. Moran mentions but never explains.

On the surface, it is perfectly reasonable to agree with the IFC's decision to take university's offer to lease the land at a rate of $1 per year. However, there continue to be many unanswered questions:

Why is the university being so generous?

What is the university getting out of this extremely philanthropic act?

What are the criteria Mr. Moran states the IFC used to select this area?

What criteria were used to select the previous sites that were ultimately rejected?

What is to happen to the men who are turned away from using one of the 20 emergency beds?

How will the IFC and town keep them from taking up residence in the woods and Homestead Park adjacent to the proposed shelter?

I personally call upon Mayor Foy, the Town Council, and Mr. Moran to take the lead in addressing these issues in an objective and transparent manner.
