Ray Griffenhagen, 91, who worked for Westinghouse Corp. for more than 44 years, died July 26.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Perdue University in 1938 with a degree in chemical engineering and accepted a job with Westinghouse Corp. in Pittsburgh.
During the war years he worked indirectly with the Manhattan Project. In 1946 Westinghouse moved the Motor Division to Buffalo where he worked in management in quality control and motor design. He retired in 1982.
In 1940 he married Peggy Mielenz with whom he shared a strong interest in education. They hosted many foreign colleagues, students and friends including an American Field Service (AFS) daughter from Colombia in 1970-71. In 1965 he and Peggy received the Education Service Award from the Williamsville School District.
Mr. Griffenhagen’s volunteer work included his church, AFS, YMCA, (BAMM), Buffalo Area Metropolitan Ministry; (HOME), Housing Opportunities Made Equal; (BEAM), Buffalo Engineering Awareness for Minorities, and (RID) Remove Intoxicated Drivers.
In 1992 he moved to Carol Woods, a retirement community in Chapel Hill, with plans for a soft life of leisure and golf but found an active and contributory life until his illness and death.
In addition to his wife, survivors include children David, Susan, Anne and John; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
