Clyde Lewis Duke

Clyde Lewis Duke, 75, died Thursday at Britthaven of Chapel Hill.

Duke was a native of Durham but had lived in Chapel Hill most of his life. He was the son of the late Garland L. Duke and Jeppie Mae Pendergrass. He was retired from the Cary Police Department where he worked as a dispatcher. He was of the Baptist faith.

Duke had attended the N.C. School for the Blind in Raleigh and was an avid collector of John Wayne memorabilia. On one occasion he even traveled to California and met Wayne's wife and became friends with her.

He is survived by a sister, Willie Ann Dollar of Graham; a brother, Edward W. Clark of Chapel Hill; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

John Arne Carlson

John Arne Carlson, 66, of Rocky Knolls Road, Chapel Hill, died at his home Tuesday.

He was born Feb. 12, 1943, in Chicago, the son of Rolf John Harry Carlson and Evelyn Marie Hakanson Carlson.

He attended Princeton University for three years, graduated from the University of Illinois, and received his master's degree in education from UNC. He was a real estate appraiser for 20 years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill, and was also active in the VASA Swedish Club of Raleigh.

Survivors include his brother, Rolf Carlson of Worthington, Minn.; as well as nieces and nephews.

The memorial service to celebrate his life was conducted by Pastor David Hood on Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
