Lawrence S. Birkemo
Lawrence S. Birkemo, 56, died March 11.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Geitgey Birkemo, and daughters, Lisabeth and Lindsey Birkemo of Chapel Hill; mother, Eleanor Birkemo of Sun City, Ariz.; and brother, Charles Birkemo of Sun Lakes, Ariz.
Larry was born in Chicago, Ill. After graduating from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., in 1974, he moved to North Carolina and pursued further studies in psychology at UNC. He was employed at GlaxoSmithKline for over 20 years.

Michael V. O'Hare
Michael V. O'Hare, 73, formerly of Arlington and Chatham, Va., died March 15 at UNC Hospitals.
He was born in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Margaret Mary and Owen J. O'Hare. He served in the Marine Corps and was a graduate of Catholic University. He spent his career in Washington, D.C., as an administrator for the Overseas Development Council, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center's Malaria Program.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Owen O'Hare, and is survived and mourned by his wife, Kathleen Hurt O'Hare; two children of the home, Owen and Margaret O'Hare; a daughter, Kate O'Hare Giovanello and husband Nick Giovanello; three brothers, Edward O'Hare and wife Glenna of Staten Island, N.Y.; Robert O'Hare and wife Doreen of Allentown, N.J.; Jack O'Hare and wife Eileen of Plainsboro, N.J.; and one sister, Catherine O'Hare Simon of Charleston, S.C.; many nieces and nephews; and many friends and colleagues.
The funeral service was held Thursday.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at UNC Hospitals who cared so well and so compassionately for Michael, particularly the nurses in the Neurosurgical ICU unit, and Drs. Anand Germanwala and Tiffany Perry.

Richard Morrison MacLeod
Richard Morrison MacLeod, 74, died Wednesday after a long-term illness.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., Nov. 25, 1934, to Roderick and Gertrude MacLeod. At 17, he entered the U.S. Air Force and spent the next 22 years serving his country. He retired in 1973. During his service years he spent much time overseas, twice in Europe and during the Vietnam War, and he spent two tours in Thailand in a supporting role of the war.
He worked as a social worker for Broward County for 25 years and retired in 1999. While working as a social worker, he started a very successful mobile unit, which was a very important service program for the county.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Janice MacLeod, of Pittsboro, and a sister Margaret (Ernest) Smith of Holden, Mass. He also leaves two daughters, Lisa (Mark) Gough, of Pittsboro , Cheryl (Matthew) Stanislawski of Boynton Beach, Fla., and son Richard (Holly) MacLeod of Durham. He also leaves six grandchildren, Kelly (Michael) Boyd, Nicholas Stanislawski, Melissa Stanislawski, Jahn Billaber, Charli and Nina MacLeod.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill at 4 p.m. Friday. Afterward, friends and family will be welcomed at the home, 133 Fox Chapel Lane in Pittsboro.
