Jorge Alberto Rivera

Jorge Alberto Rivera, 42, of Chapel Hill, died Wednesday at UNC Hospitals.

Mr. Rivera was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and was the son of Jorge Rivera and Andrea Perez Flores. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill and was employed by World Stone and Granite Co. He had a degree in electrical engineering and was also a good mechanic. He also loved playing football and visiting flea markets.

Surviving Jorge are his parents; his wife, Amelia Rivera Lopez, of Chapel Hill; two sons, Jorge Rivera and Ian Rivera of the home; one daughter, Andrea Rivera, also of the home; two brothers, Alejandro Rivera of Carrboro; and Mauricio Rivera of Durham; two sisters, Lilia Carmona of Pittsboro; and Rocio Rodriguez of Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill with Father Romen Acero officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in care of the family for his children.

Helen L. Slingerland

Helen L. Slingerland, 80, entered into the Glory of her Lord on March 28.

She died from complications following surgery after gallantly fighting and surviving cancer for 10 years. She was born March 20, 1929, in Roselle, Ill., to Henry Siems and Emma Lichthardt Siems. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Walter R. Slingerland Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Helen Owens of Mebane, Lisa Slingerland Wallis of Shanghai, China; sons-in-law, Robert E. Owens and Mark S. Wallis; grandchildren, Sarah K. Owens, Mark S. Wallis II, Andrew W. Wallis.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Worship Center, the Rev. David Hood officiating. Interment will be in Schaumburg, Ill., at St. Peter Lutheran Church cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Dorothy Brown Miller

Mrs. Jesse L. (Dorothy Brown) Miller, 100, died March 31 at Pittsboro Christian Village.

She was born April 15, 1908, in Grand Island, Neb., the daughter of Herb Brown and Susie Luberg Hubbard Brown. She moved to North Carolina in 1946 and taught school for 31 years in Sanford and Pittsboro. She was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.

Surviving are stepson Jack Miller of Grand Island; stepdaughters Mary Deitrich of Hastings, Neb., Betty Hill of Grand Island and Phyllis Newman of Pensacola, Fla.

The funeral service was held Friday at Pittsboro Christian Village with James Clark presiding. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Nancy Mae Walker Pruden

Nancy Mae Walker Pruden, 87, of Burlington, Chapel Hill, Edenton and Nags Head died March 28 in Hillsborough.

There was a celebration of her life at Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill on April 4. A memorial service will be held at at 2 p.m. April 18 at St. Paul's Espiscopal Church in Edenton. Visitation will follow at the home of Mrs. Charles H. Wood Jr., 205 S. Granville St. in Edenton.

Mrs. Pruden was born on Nov. 4, 1921, and raised in Burlington, the daughter of Dr. Walter E. and Carrie Mae Walker.

She was devoted to her family and friends and liked nothing better than to gather with her husband, Jack McMullan Pruden, her children and friends on the back porch of the Pruden cottage at Nags Head.

Mrs. Pruden is survived by three children: J.C. Bagwell, III of Tallahassee, Fla., McMullan (Mack) Pruden Jr. of Chapel Hill, Walker Pruden of Waves, N.C., and three grandchildren, Sophie Rose Pruden, Jack Pruden and Sam Pruden. She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Nancy Pruden of Chapel Hill.

Fran Hollister

Fran Hollister, 94, died at Carol Woods on March 30.

Fran was born in Doniphan, Neb., in 1914 and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1938. She was an early advocate for racial equality, women's rights, good education and a peaceful world. She devoted 30 years to raising four children with her husband, Bill. Fran undertook leadership roles with the Parents and Teachers Association, the Cub and the Girl Scouts, Triangle Weavers and the Chapel Hill Library. She was a passionate gardener and she volunteered as a 'Herbie' at the North Carolina Botanical Garden for 32 years. She trained as a pianist, accompanying silent movies in the 1930s and teaching piano to children in the 1960s, proudly earning enough to purchase a grand piano, which she donated to the church. Fran and Bill were founding members of Unitarian Universalist Churches in Ft. Worth, Texas; Atlanta, Ga., Bethesda, Md.; and Durham.

A Celebration of Life service will held at the Eno River UU Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Road, on Saturday, April11. Tax-deductible donations 'In Memory of Fran Hollister' can be made to either the N.C. Botanical Garden, CB3375 Totten Center, Chapel Hill NC 27599-3375, or to 'The School Kitchen Fund' of the Sister Communities of San Ramon, Nicaragua, at SCSRN, 1320 Shepherd St, Durham NC 27707.
