Clyde Ray Jones

Clyde Ray Jones, 81, of Mebane died April 20, 2009, at his home.

He was born May 17, 1927, in Chatham County and raised in Orange County. He was one of eight children born to the late Millard and Thelma Jones.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanette Jones; his son Sam (Joan); stepdaughters Angie (Johnny) Johnson, Candi (Jimmy) Dykes and Lysa (David) May; grandchildren Joseph and Joshua Jones; step-grandchildren Lauren and Aaron Johnson, Ashley (Matt) Netzel and Travis Dykes, B.J. and Kyle Moffett, Tara and Colby May; and step-great grandchild James Netzel. Survivors also include brothers Roy (Clairice) Jones and Ed Jones; sisters Marie (J.D) Zedaker, Nancy (Robert) Dodd; and numerous nieces and nephews. His former wife Mildred also survives.

He was predeceased in death by brothers Clarence, Raymond and Billy.

Clyde served his country in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was a barber at the Friendly Barber Shop in Carrboro for numerous years and a volunteer firefighter with the Carrboro Fire Department. He was also a founding member and served as Chief of the South Orange Rescue Squad, retiring from his career as a paramedic with Orange County Emergency Services.

Clyde was a natural born storyteller who entertained all with his great sense of humor. He was an avid fisherman and loved to cook. Next to his love for his family, his greatest joy was supporting his Carolina Tarheels. He will be missed by all.

Funeral services were held April 24 at Efland United Methodist Church. Burial followed at the church cemetery on Brookhollow Road.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be sent to the Efland United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 121 Efland NC 27243.

Christopher Wayne Marlow

Christopher Wayne Marlow, 30, formerly of Chapel Hill, died unexpectedly at his residence in Columbia, S.C. on April 21, 2009.

Chris was born in Chapel Hill on March 26, 1979, the son of Jimmy Wayne Marlow and Deborah Lynn Williams Marlow. He was a 1997 graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than four years, where he worked as a military police officer. At the time of his death Chris was a deputy sheriff for Lexington County, S.C.

Survivors include his father, Jimmy, of Chapel Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Cara Marlow, and their daughters Camryn and Jules, all of Burlington; and a large extended family.

Chris' mother, Debbie, preceded him in death.

At his request, Chris will be cremated and a private memorial service will be held. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Jean Caldwell Cheek

Jean Caldwell Cheek, loving wife of Lawrence M. Cheek; beloved mother of Carol Alton, John, Michael, James and Thomas Cheek, died Tuesday.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated in the Valley Presbyterian Church, 2200 W. Joppa Road, Lutherville, Md., at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29. Intermen is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed in Mrs. Cheek's name to Valley Presbyterian Church at the above address.

William Popper

William (Bill) Popper, 48, died on April 21, 2009, in the home of Mareah Steketee, after a long illness.

Mr. Popper was born in New York City on Dec. 11, 1960, and has lived primarily in Chapel Hill since the late 1970s. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986. Over the course of his life he was active in volunteering for environmental causes and at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. He especially loved the North Carolina mountains and contra dancing.

He is survived by many close friends, his mother, Theresa Parente, and his brother, Clifford Popper. A date for a memorial service will be announced later.

Marie E. Lojko

Marie E. (Dion) Lojko, 87, a longtime resident of Nashua, N.H., died April 22, 2009, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Lojko was born in Manchester, N.H., on July 15, 1921, one of nine children to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dion. She was educated in Manchester schools.

She was the widow of Peter J. Lojko, who passed away on Dec. 13, 1984.

Mrs. Lojko worked as a seamstress for several companies throughout her career, including Miller's and Bergeron's in Nashua.

Her passion was spending time enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed knitting and supported Bishop Guertin High School over the years. In her younger years, she was an avid gardener and very proud of her yard.

At one time, she was an active communicant of St. Stanislaus Church in Nashua.

Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Jack Tulley of Nashua, and Rebecca and Tim Slosek of Chapel Hill; her five grandchildren, Marshall Tulley of Nashua, Morgan Long and her husband Jamison, of Naples, Fla., Kyle, Trevor and Audra Slosek all of North Carolina. Her first great-grandson is expected in June.

Visiting hours were held Saturday, followed by a prayer service. Interment prayers and burial were private.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial donation to Bishop Guertin High School, 194 Lund Road, Nashua, NH 03060.

Diana Moore-McLennan

Diana Moore-McLennan of Chapel Hill passed away after a long illness on April 20. She was 52.

She is survived by her loving husband, Don, of 31 years; her son, Christopher, of Jacksonville, Fla.; her mother, Eleonore Moore, of Chapel Hill. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Saunders, of Chapel Hill.

Services were held on Thursday at the Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill.

Robert Whitelaw Wilson

Robert Whitelaw Wilson, 88, of Charlotte passed away April 23, 2009, at N.C. Baptist Hospital, succumbing to injuries from a December 2008 farming accident.

Mr. Wilson was a rare human who achieved the highest level of accomplishment professionally and, at the same time, was the generous, open-hearted patriarch of his extended family.

He was born March 21, 1921, in Burlington, Wisc. He attended Oberlin College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, a bachelor's degree in agriculture and a master's degree in agricultural engineering. He served as an officer in the United States Navy in the Second World War and the Korean War. He taught for several years as associate professor at N.C. State University.

He joined R.H. Bouligny in 1954 and served as president of Powell Manufacturing Company and Rowe Corporation. At 66, he was founding president of American Ripener Company, specializing in products to ripen fruits, vegetables and tobacco.

As an inventor and an innovator with over 160 worldwide patents, he was largely responsible for mechanization of flue-cured tobacco. His engineering abilities, keen interest, intensity of purpose, character and integrity were recognized by all who worked with him.

He showed perpetual love and devotion to his family and all those they loved. His honesty, love and energetic inquisitiveness made him a mentor and hero to his family. He had a relentlessly optimistic spirit and quietly laughed at any adversity.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Wilson; his children, Phillip Wilson, and wife Libby, of Chapel Hill; Reid Wilson, and wife Bentha, of Chapel Hill; Karen Ann Christenbery, and husband Bob, of Charlotte; his grandchildren Bob Christenbery, Charlie Christenbery, Joanna Wilson, Patrick Wilson, Michael Wilson and Matt Wilson.

Family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Harry and Bryant Co., 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Gabriel's Church, 1800 Sharon Lane, Charlotte.
