Hazel Wimberly Brown

Mrs. Hazel Wimberly Brown, 85, of Pittsboro, died May 27 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Mrs. Brown was a Chatham County native, born Dec. 6, 1923, to Charles Green Wimberly and Maude Hearn Wimberly. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Picket of Pittsboro; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack L. Wimberly of Florence, S.C.; a sister, Delana W. Wicker of Greensboro; and two sisters-in-law, Sarah Wimberly of Moncure and Betty Wimberly of Aberdeen.

Her husband, Cecil Brown, and sons Larry K. Brown and Cecil Charles Brown preceded Hazel in death.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Brown's life was held Saturday from the graveside at Chatham Memorial Park cemetery, with Rev. Bob Wachs presiding.

Joseph Theodore Brugnolotti

Joseph Theodore Brugnolotti, 75, of Chapel Hill, died May 26, 2009, at UNC Hospitals.

Joseph was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Aldo and Florence Vassallo Brugnolotti. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a retired administrator for UNC Hospitals.

He is survived by his brother, Dominick Brugnolotti and wife, AnnMarie; nephew, Dominick Brugnolotti and wife, Lynn; nieces, Pattie Dripps, Elizabeth Simpson and husband, John, Julia Garrett and husband, Jay, Christine Gandy and husband, David, and Ann Mullis and husband, Gary; grand-nieces, Sarah Connolly, Jennifer Brugnolotti, Rebecca Simpson, Maria Gandy, Casey Gandy, and Jessica Gandy; grand-nephew, Russell Dripps; great-grand-nephews, Dominick, Patrick Joseph, and James Connolly.

He was preceded in death by one grand-nephew, Raymond Dripps.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

A private graveside service will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Velna Moore Pendergraph

Mrs. Velna Moore Pendergraph, 82, of Foxfire Trace, Pittsboro, died May 26 in her home.

Mrs. Pendergraph was born in Chatham County on Nov. 29, 1926, a daughter to Ed and Fannie Johnson Moore. She was retired from Chatham Mills, where she worked as a weaver for a number of years. Mrs. Pendergraph was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Pendergraph, of the home; son, Lee Pendergraph of Moncure; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Alvin Fuller of Pittsboro; brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Willadene Moore of Pittsboro; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Earline Veasey; grandson, Craig Veasey; and brother, Bobby Moore.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Pendergraph's life was held Friday from the graveside at Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pearl Hing Howe

Pearl Hing Howe died May 28 in her home in Chapel Hill, surrounded by her family.

She was born December 6, 1913, in China, one of a family of 13 brothers and sisters.

Pearl immigrated to the U.S. in 1948 to escape the Communist takeover of China. She and her husband, Lee Fun Howe, settled in Wilmington, where they raised their two children. She moved to Chapel Hill after Lee Fun's death in1979. Pearl is predeceased by her son, Lee Unwah Howe.

She is survived by her daughter, Lee Jeannie Howe Ambrose; son-in-law, Wallace Ambrose; granddaughter, Rebecca Ellen; and daughter-in-law, Ramona Hutton-Howe and her daughters, Lee Erin, Lee Emma, and Lee Megan.

Pearl had a very fun loving spirit and was enduring and optimistic throughout her life. She was gracious and giving, always offering refreshments to friends and family. It wasn't a meal if it wasn't warm and shared with someone. She was the neighborhood's master gardener, the family's mah-jong expert, the world's slowest bowler and mini-golfer, and her grandchildren's best playmate. She will be greatly missed by all of those whom she loved and nurtured.

Visitation at Walker's Funeral Home will be Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 11 a.m., at Markham Memorial Gardens.
