Mrs. Minnie Robert Dixon McCormick Burns, 90, of Bear Creek died June 8 at The Laurels of Chatham.

Born April 4, 1919, at home in Chatham County, she was a daughter of Charles Franklin and Katie Mae Smith McCormick. Mrs. Burns was a retired seamstress, but had earlier operated Pickard's Department Store for a number of years. She was fiercely independent, a "spunky little soul" who loved traveling, dining out and was always ready to go.

Mrs. Burns was a member of Mays Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nadine and Don Overby of Bear Creek; granddaughter, Carmane Honeycutt; step-grandchildren, Amy Wilkinson and Mark Overby; brother, James McCormick of Delaware; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Bud Holder of Pittsboro; and a number of nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Burns' life will be held at 1 p.m. today from Mays Chapel Baptist Church, 24 Rosser Rd., Bear Creek, with Pastors Val Chadwick and Eric Davidson presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family today from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be given to either the Mays Chapel Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Linda Mosley, 2399 Pittsboro-Goldston Rd, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to the charity of one's choice.

Lewis was born in 1927. He grew up on Lemola Farm and lived there all his life. He and Everett and their father owned purebred Ayrshire dairy cattle. They took great pride in breeding and showing their cows and Lewis was honored late in his career by being named to the North Carolina State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame.

For many years Lewis served as Sunday school superintendent and deacon at Bethel Baptist Church. He was close to God, to his friends and especially to his family, for whom he was a constant source of good-natured wit and humor.

Lewis loved the North Carolina Tar Heels. This spring he had the intense pleasure of watching them win one more national basketball championship.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 13, between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. at the home of Larry Cheek, 1601 Dairyland Road, Chapel Hill.
