John Chilton Mott
The Rev. John Chilton Mott of Wrightsville Beach died July 7, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Norfolk, Va., the son of the late Burke Wylie and May Pitt Mott. The Rev. Mott graduated from the University of Virginia and Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1943.
His first parish was in Chatham, Va. He also served as rector of parishes in Henderson, where he met his wife Myrtle; Greensboro; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Chapel Hill; and Wilmington.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myrtle Alson Mott; daughters, Betsy Shears and husband Chris of Boulder, Colo., Margaret Mott of Pasadena, Calif., Haywood Mason and husband Bill of Wilmington; and son, John Christian Mott and wife Gina of Chapel Hill. He is also survived by grandchildren Alston and Elizabeth Mason, Jen and Andrew Shears, and John and Sutton Mott.
He was predeceased by his first child, Mary Chilton Mott, who died before 3 years of age.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be given to the Church of the Servant, 4925 Oriole Dr., Wilmington.
