Larry Dean Carswell of Chapel Hill died April 19 at UNC Hospitals after a period of declining health. He was 54.

He was born in Chapel Hill and lived there his entire life. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1971 and worked at The Chapel Hill Newspaper as a teenager. While attending UNC-Chapel Hill, he began Lily Pad Waterbeds, one of the first waterbed furniture stores in the area. After leaving the retail furniture business, he sold closet and home organization systems. In recent years, he was the evening manager for the Shell convenience store at the corner of N.C. 54 and Interstate 40.

A funeral service will be conducted April 23 at 2 p.m. at Farrington Road Baptist Church in Chapel Hill by the Rev. Jim Greenlee. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Survivors include three brothers, John Carswell Jr. of Raleigh, Fred Carswell of Henderson and Tom Carswell of Cary.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
