Arthur Hurow of Chapel Hill died at his home on May 3.

He was a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Army.

He was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1935. He was drafted in 1942 and completed Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga. He was assigned to an infantry regiment that fought in Italy in early 1945. His unit also was deployed to the Pacific Theater in preparation for the invasion of Japan. He served in the Korean War and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He served in France, Germany and Vietnam. He attended the Advanced Management program at the Harvard Business School. He commanded the Transportation School at Fort Eustis, Va., where he attained the rank of brigadier general. He also commanded the Eastern Area Military Traffic Management Service in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He served on the Chapel Hill Planning Board for five years beginning in 1970, on the original board of directors of the Orange Water and Sewer Authority from 1975 to 1980, and on the Town and Gown Blue Ribbon Commission. He was a co-founder of Triangle Cremation Services Inc., now known as Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

His military medals and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, The Legion of Merit with Cluster, The Purple Heart, The Bronze Medal with V device and Cluster, The Army Commendation Medal, and The Air Medal. He was inducted into the Infantry Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Ga.

A celebration of his life will be held May 24 at 2 p.m. in the ballroom of The Cedars of Chapel Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Gerda G. "Kani" Hurow.
