Gladys Wright Holmes

Gladys Wright Holmes, 88, died peacefully on March 10 at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill.

She was born in 1920 in Star, N.C., to D. Thomas and Myrtie Hare Wright. The eldest of three children, she grew up on a dairy farm. She married George Thomas Holmes in 1941 and was his devoted wife for 54 years until his death in 1955. Together they raised three children.

Mrs. Holmes is survived by her children, Dr. George Thomas (Margaret) Holmes III of Painted Post, N.Y.; Elaine Holmes of Chapel Hill; and Dr. Alan (Dr. Dorothy) Holmes of Santa Barbara, Calif.; four grandchildren, George Thomas (Cindy) Holmes IV, Stephen (Dr. Jessica) Holmes, Michael Holmes and Patrick Holmes; and five great-grandchildren, Katie, Justin, and Sarah Holmes and Julie and Justin O'Grady. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Stutts of Star, N.C., and her sister-in-law, Rosalie Holmes of Snow Hill, N.C.

A graduate of Elon College, Mrs. Holmes devoted her life to caring for her family. Her husband's long career with ALCOA took the family to Alcoa, Tenn., Wenatchee, Wash.; Evansville, Ind.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Badin, N.C. After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes made their home in Pinehurst, N.C.

Mrs. Holmes was active in the Moore Regional Hospital Toymakers, a volunteer group dedicated to making stuffed animals for sick children. She found the activity so rewarding that she formed a similar group in 1997 when she moved to Carol Woods, where she affectionately became known as the "The Doll Lady."

Graveside services were held Friday at St. Barnabas Cemetery in Snow Hill. In appreciation for the kind and expert care provided by Carol Woods' staff, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Carol Woods Staff Development Fund, Carol Woods Retirement Community, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
