Edward A. Johnson

Edward A. Johnson, 87, a longtime resident of Carol Woods in Chapel Hill, passed away unexpectedly on June 21.

Ed was born in Baltimore, Md., to the late Edward F. and Katharyn P. Johnson. He grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y., and attended Scarsdale schools and Deerfield Academy. After receiving his B.S. in chemical engineering from Princeton University, Ed worked 40 years as a chemical engineer with Exxon. His first job with them was in Baton Rouge, La., where he married the late Louise Doherty. After her death, he married Frances Tucker Owen and moved with his four children and her three children to New York. Later he was transferred to Florida, and worked for Alaska Pipeline in Alaska, California, Texas and Colorado.

Ed loved to sing, singing in the Princeton Glee Club, Exxon Chorus, and later with friends at Carol Woods. He loved to travel around the world and tell stories of his adventures. Ed was the president of the Residents Association at Carol Woods and a deacon and elder at his church.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife Frances and his daughter Carol Johnson Rohde.

He is survived by his sister Jane Kent of North Carolina; sons Edward F. Johnson II of Idaho, Kimbrough Owen of Alaska, John Owen of New Hampshire; daughters Sally Owen of Massachusetts, Katharyn Cross of California and Ruth Duckworth of North Carolina; and grandchildren Katharyn and Allison Rohde, Nicholas and Ian Cross, Kaitlyn and Cody Duckworth and Ned and Jake Johnson.

The funeral service will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill.

Memorial gifts may be made in lieu of flowers to University Presbyterian Church, 209 E. Franklin St. Chapel Hill, NC 27514; or Camp Pasquaney, 19 Pasquaney Lane, Hebron, NH 03241; or Carol Woods Charitable Fund, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, NC.

Paul Graham Kemp

On Saturday, June 27, 2009, family and friends of Paul Graham Kemp celebrated his life with potluck and memories at his Carrboro home, where he passed away peacefully on May 26, three days after his 51st birthday.

He is survived by his loving wife Carol; his daughters Makayla of the home and Cheryl of Burlington and grandson Omarion; his father Bernie; and brothers Steve of Chapel Hill and Sid (Kris) of Boca Raton, Fla.

Paul was the former President of the Mid-Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club. He graduated from the Parkway Program of Philadelphia and UNC at Chapel Hill.
