Holden Thorp faces a tall order in living up to expectations.

UNC's new chancellor assumed his post on Tuesday. His selection as the successor to James Moeser met with virtually universal approval. He's been called everything from a rock star (not that far off, actually; he does play in a rock band) to a supernova, and students were impressed that his first official duty on Tuesday was to meet with them at a breakfast at the Campus Y. "He's not just any chancellor," said J. J. Raynor, the student body president.

For our part, we're happy to hear that he identified one of his top priorities as building a good working partnership with the town. That collaboration will be essential on any number of fronts, including the revitalization of Franklin Street and the planning and building of the Carolina North research campus.

Chapel Hill and the university are inextricably yoked together. It's reassuring that the new chancellor recognizes that in order for town and campus to reach their potential, they must work together and agree on which way to go.
