Commentary: In this month’s column, I hope to initiate a community conversation – or, at a minimum, provoke an open-minded examination – regarding an educational tradition that I believe is causing more harm than good for our students.

Commentary: I never got justice as a little girl. It took me nearly 30 years to disclose that I was sexually abused as a child. I didn’t share or open up because I didn’t think anyone would believe me or, worse, do anything about it.

My View: My mother’s family had a genius for upcycling. Their county roads were scraped dirt, so driving in severe weather was scary and daring, particularly in the school bus and particularly since the drivers were high school seniors. If the bus strayed from its well-worn ruts, the dirt road became a Slip ‘n Slide, landing the delighted riders in a ditch.

I fully support Ms. Dawson’s recent letter to the editor (CHN, May 26, bit.ly/10TL9VY) protesting the cuts to the Latin program in our school system.

Commentary: We love our pets, our furry children. But when it comes to picking up after them, many owners fall short on the uptake, so to speak.

Commentary: Spring surprised me on a mid-February dawn. Two yellow blooms shone through the bleak wet, like Jupiter and bright Aldebaran side-by-side, cradled in a waxing crescent the night before. For that moment, those fluting, unlikely dabs were mine only, though a neighbor (now gone?) planted them long ago.

My View: When I first encountered a den of Red Fox kits in April of this year, I believe that slyness would be the least appropriate word to describe the four tiny creatures I saw before me. I could not imagine how these rolling balls of fluff could possibly survive in such a public setting.

I am writing to express my concern that Japanese language instruction in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools might be phased out as a result of funding cuts. Our daughter Emma has been a student in this program, and she very much enjoys learning Japanese. More importantly, from a strategic perspective, there are more than 100 million Japanese speakers in the world, most of whom do not speak any English. Japan is also the third largest economy in the world and the fourth largest U.S. trading partner.

My View: The crowd started to form at a little after 5:30 p.m., growing quickly and eventually joined by the nearly five dozen people who had volunteered to be arrested.
