The cultural landscape of downtown Chapel Hill has brightened considerably in the last few weeks, first with the announcement that the Varsity Theatre will re-open in what sounds like a cool new incarnation, and last Monday with the Town Council's agreement to lease Kidzu Children's Museum permanent space atop the Wallace Parking Deck.

Now that the regular elections are over, perhaps the mayor and Town Council can recommit to the logically inherent concept that elective offices are best elected by the citizens, by moving quickly to arrange a special filing and election so "we the people" can elect our new council member to the seat vacated by Bill Strom.
