In this month’s column I’m going to let the cat out of the bag. I want to tell you about the best-kept secret in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools: Phoenix Academy High School. Published: May. 4, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

ACC accord could come back to haunt

Like a lot of other people in these parts, I shrugged off last month’s announcement by the ACC’s Council of Presidents that they had signed off on a grant-of-rights (GOR) agreement designed to “stabilize” the 15-school conference. Published: May. 4, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

The Promised Land

At the edge of my grandfather’s garden lay a large, soil-filled area outlined with rocks. A very permanent raised bed, it was the animal graveyard. When a kitten or chick or puppy died, my grandmother gave the children a box and the five siblings picked flowers, assigned roles, rehearsed prayers, and then processed toward the garden cemetery, minister at the head, gravediggers in the rear, all of them singing “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand.” Published: Apr. 30, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

The Walmart cometh

Those of us living in the southern reaches of greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro or across the border in northern Chatham can’t help but notice the progress of the new Walmart on U.S. 15-501. Published: Apr. 27, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Professor’s broad brush paints Orange County unfairly

Dean Smith was a pioneering devotee of statistical analysis to improve team and individual performance. But the acclaimed basketball coach also warned that statistics could be manipulated to say most anything. “I only use statistics to reinforce what I already think, or if it’s something unusual,” Smith conceded back in 1990. Parking models poor fit for downtown Carrboro

Last month a Chapel Hill News editorial raised several concerns about the state of parking in downtown Carrboro. These concerns are largely unfounded and demonstrate the need for a greater understanding of why conventional parking strategies are generally a poor fit for a downtown like ours. Orange County prices diversity out

The cost of living in Orange County and Chapel Hill is driving black residents elsewhere. Elected officials could bring the cost down, instead of trying band-aids for “affordability.” Published: Apr. 24, 2013 11:34 AM | Full story
