Your letters, March 10

As class enrollment for next year begins, we’ve noticed a lot of people signing up for online A.P. classes. Online classes were originally meant to be a tool for students who physically could not go to school, or who could not meet the graduation requirements, but they’ve evolved into GPA-inflators. Over the past three seasons the property owners where we have hunted have reported seeing fewer deer, and have said that they are experiencing less damage to their property each year. So it would appear that the hunting is having the desired effect of managing the deer population. Published: Mar. 2, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Two recent articles, “Forum targets school suspension inequity” (CHN, Feb. 6) and “Zero tolerance and the school-to-prison pipeline” (CHN, Jan. 29) reminded me of the work Of James Heckman, the Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at The University of Chicago, a Nobel Memorial Prize winner in Economics, and an expert in the economics of human development. Yes, Orange County residents, who live in the ETJ and enjoy Chapel Hill’s parks, library and community bus system contribute funding for these services by paying Orange County property taxes. Those of us living in Chapel Hill pay the same Orange County property tax as those who live in the EJT – as well as a Chapel Hill property tax. Published: Feb. 8, 2013 1:35 PM | Full story

It’s the 1770s in colonial America. We are facing terror attacks from people who live in the same country that we do (Native Americans), we are suspicious of supporting a standing army from our experiences in Europe and we have a lot of slaves that are escaping and who might just rebel violently. The main complaint against an Obey Creek development seems to be a desire to reduce traffic, but in my opinion it’s the Chapel Hill tradition of animosity to retail development which is a major contributor to Chapel Hill’s traffic problems. Published: Jan. 22, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

The Second Amendment was written to prevent the subjugation of the people by foreign or domestic powers. The most effective way to prevent that situation is to allow citizens to posses the same small arms used by the police and military. Published: Jan. 15, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Fifth graders respond to Newtown tragedy

Heading to work Monday morning to face 30 10- and 11-year-olds at Rashkis Elementary, I knew they would have questions and need an outlet of response. Before the shootings, I had planned for my students to write “Peaceful Poems” of their own, after sharing and reflecting on poems from the book “Peaceful Pieces” given to me by one of my students. Little did I know how appropriate the assignment would align in helping my students deal with the emotions they were sorting through. Published: Jan. 5, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

The federal “fiscal cliff” poses a serious threat to our state’s nonprofit sector and the communities and people who depend on them.
