Praying to be ‘normal’

Growing up, I prayed that God would allow me to be the girl I knew I was. As a teenager who took her religion seriously and wanted to commit to it deeply, I prayed that God would erase my knowledge and understanding that I was a woman. I prayed to be “normal.” Published: Jul. 26, 2012 11:25 AM | Full story

Well, bless his mouth

I was 41 when I gave birth, so you’d think I might have been prepared for parenthood – but it has been a lumpy sack of surprises, joy, and trials that I don’t think I could ever have been ready for. Published: Jul. 21, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Fair taxi fares

The unintended consequences of these new regulations may hurt cab service for everyone. The new rules would immediately put five companies out of business, limit new competition, and drive up costs while limiting income. The predictable result will be fewer choices, lower quality and less safe travel. Published: Jul. 17, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

The wonder of bread

Whether from new micro-bakeries like Box Turtle Bakery in Carrboro or Chicken Bridge Bakery in northwestern Chatham, new storefront bakers like Bread and Butter on Rosemary Street or the long-established Weaver Street Market bakery, the quality and creativity of bread is soaring. Weird weather stories

The thermometer on the northern, shady side of our house reads 105 degrees. For the first time ever, the tapered candles on the screen porch have lost their erect posture and are now leaning out of their holders, their wicks resting on the mantle, limp as garden hose. Samba, sample and rap

Travel is maximized when exchange takes place – when one connects with people and each party takes something from the other. It’s like creating good music. The more artists bring their unique experiences to the table, the higher the possibility for robust collaboration. Published: Jul. 9, 2012 9:51 AM | Full story

Our outdoor adventures

Footsteps fly up our wooden front steps. The door shoots open. And then comes the familiar cry at my house this summer: “Mom and Dad! You’ve got to see this!” Published: Jul. 3, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Goodnight, sweet Doc, goodnight

Doc Watson inspired generations of guitarists to explore and marvel at his legendary musical talent. Blinded in infancy, he nonetheless mastered guitar, banjo, fiddle, and harmonica. He has also been a part of my life since the time I was born. Published: Jun. 30, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

No holding me back

If you had told me that I would join the wresting team in seventh grade, I wouldn’t have believed you. Published: Jun. 26, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Past and future together

As our cities move inexorably forward, the past fades, soon forgotten. Perhaps what is needed is a yearly community pilgrimage for people to remember the good – and the uglier – parts of the past (so as not to repeat it), and pause in the present in order to move forward as citizens united on our future, and not divided.
