Roses to Dan Greenberg, who used to help East Chapel Hill High School win tennis championships and now will try to coach the Williams College team to do the same.

Greenberg recently was named the head tennis coach at Williams, his alma mater, which is in Williamstown, Mass. What's most remarkable about this is that just last year Greenberg was a player for the Williams team; he graduated a year ago after winning the 2008 Player of Year Award in the News England Small Colleges Conference. That makes him one of the youngest NCAA coaches in the nation.

Not many people jump from a spot on the roster into the head coach's office in a single bound. But then Greenberg isn't just any tennis player. He's one of four Greenberg brothers who helped East Chapel Hill win a string of state team titles. After graduating last year he took a job as assistant pro at Hollow Rock Racquet Club in Durham, and last fall he served as a volunteer coach at UNC.

High school champion, college conference player of the year and now head coach. Game, set and match.

Roses to the Art Therapy Institute and teacher Mimi Collins, who have helped young refugees from Burma learn to adapt to a dramatically different new home and find new ways to express themselves.

The young refugees, who came here from harsh lives in camps in Burma, have been studying with Collins at The Newcomer Center at Chapel Hill High School. There they are learning not only English but the cultural frame of reference necessary to understand the language -- how do you learn the word for "television," for example, if you've never seen one?

Staff from the Durham-based Art Therapy Institute, founded by Kristin Linton, Eva Miller and Ilene Sperling, have been working with the children to encourage them to put their experiences and feelings down on paper -- not in words, but in pictures. Art can provide an outlet for difficult emotions and open avenues of communication, and the children responded with some remarkable pieces. Their artwork was put on display at University Mall, and the young refugees were the stars at a reception for the show.

Let's hope that such encouragement, contact and support helps the young people start to heal the scars left by their hard lives in the camps and gives them a platform on which to build new futures.

Roses to Freedom House, the Chapel Hill-based substance abuse recovery center that recently dedicated a major expansion of its facilities.

The $2.7 million expansion features two new buildings. A new detox clinic will double Freedom House's capacity, allowing the center to treat 16 people at a time. A new outpatient building will provide meeting space, offices and food services.

Freedom House serves those among us who are trapped in the ruinous cycles of alcoholism, addiction and abuse. By helping them regain the control those conditions destroy, the center gives them the opportunity to rebuild their lives, repair and create relationships and rejoin the community as active and productive members.
