Two weeks ago we opposed allowing limited bowhunting within the city limits in order to control the deer population, on the grounds that it would likely be ineffective and would pose too much risk to residents. Here's what some readers had to say:

How unfeeling of Police Chief Brian Curran and Lt. Kevin Gunter not to endorse deer bow-hunts on Mt. Bolus Road! The police should immediately forget all about dealing with larcenies, embezzlements, bank robberies, break-ins, assaults, armed robberies... What could be more important than protecting Mt. Bolus hostas and liriope from the ravages of deer? And if an occasional stray arrow hits a passerby or two, so be it.

Once upon a time, many many years ago there was a King who allowed rovingherds of deer to take over his lands. There was strong support for reducing the deer population and when the people could stand it no longer they removed the King. It was noted that this was the first instance on record wherethe reign was culled on account of the game.
