Just lipped out

Golfer Tyler Dice of Chapel Hill tied for seventh with a two-under-par 70 in qualifying rounds Friday for the U.S. Open Championship, but got edged out on the fifth playoffs hole by River Landing Assistant Golf Professional Paul Dickens of Wallace, who was playing on his home course on his home course. Reid Darsie of Chapel Hill was just three strokes back at 73.

Brad Revell of Canada and Ryan Healy of Wilmington shared medalist honors after firing a four-under par 68 in very windy conditions at River Landing's River Course. A four-for-three playoff was held at three-under par 69 with Matt Hendrix of Greenville, S.C., Matthew Hill of Canada, and Cliff Benson III of Raleigh winning the final qualifying positions on the first playoff hole. Kevin Grady of Woodbine, Md., is the first alternate.

The five qualifiers advance to one of 14 sectional qualifiers, 12 of which are held in the United States, one in Japan and one in England. Sectional qualifiers advance to the 108th United States Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Cal., on June 12-15.

Other qualifiers, conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association on behalf of the USGA, will be held Monday at the Gaston Country Club and then May 19 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham. More than 120 golfers have signed up for the May 19 qualifier in search of nine spots. Among them are Shaun Thompson, Jonathon Jackson and John Kolls of Chapel Hill.
