The state semifinals in boys and girls lacrosse dominate the local sports scene this week, but N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs also continue in baseball, girls soccer and dual-team tennis, while the playoffs begin in softball.

Topping the list, literally, is East Chapel Hill's No. 1-ranked girls soccer team (22-1-2), which hosted its third-round match with No. 9-ranked Raleigh Enloe (17-5-1) Tuesday night. Also on Tuesday, CHHS (16-5-3) played at No. 2-ranked Leesville Road, the only team to beat East in the regular season.

(Like all events Tuesday night, the soccer games were played too late for The Chapel Hill News sports' deadlines; see www.newsobserver.com or today's edition of the News & Observer for results.)

The N.C. High School Lacrosse Association semifinals are tonight, with most eyes turned to Culton-Peerman Stadium to see defending state champion and top-seeded Chapel Hill (18-2) host No. 5 East Chapel Hill (18-4) at 7 p.m.

The winner of tonight's match advances to the NCHSLA championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Duke University's Koskinen Stadium in Durham. (The 2-A/3-A championship will begin at 4:30 p.m.)

N.C. Women's High School Lacrosse semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m., with No. 3-seeded East Chapel Hill on the road to play No. 2 seed Charlotte Catholic. The other semi pits No. 1 Apex (which eliminated CHHS 22-9 in the quarterfinals) against No. 5 Green Hope.

The NCHSWLA championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Durham County Stadium. A state all-star game at 11 a.m. will precede the championship final.

The NCHSAA individual tennis championships are Friday and Saturday, with the 4-A brackets involving CHHS and East Chapel Hill players being played out at nearby Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The round of 16 singles will lead off at 10 a.m. Friday.

The 2-A matches will be at Cary Tennis Center, where Amir Najmabadi will have the distinction of becoming the first Carrboro High tennis player to take part in the state championships. He reached the regional semifinals last weekend to qualify and left Snow Hill with an 18-5 record, his only losses this year coming to defending 2-A finalist Will Robinson and Graham's Tyler Cook, who edged him in three sets last Saturday for third place at the regional.

Dual-team tennis competition, in which team scores determine the winner, continued yesterday (with CHHS at powerhouse Raleigh Broughton and East at undefeated Pinecrest). The dual-teams take a break for the individual championships and resume next week.

The NCHSAA held its 4-A and 2-A state track and field championships this past Saturday and the 1-A and 3-A are scheduled for this Saturday. (See Names & Notes for more about local winners.)

NCHSAA softball began yesterday, with CHHS taking on Wakefield. The first round continues today, with East Chapel Hill travelling all the way to Wilmington by 5 p.m. today to take on 18-2 Laney, the top team in southeastern North Carolina.
