Eighth-grader Alex Werden of Smith churned his way to victory in the 800 meters at the OPAC Track & Field Championships at Culton-Peerman Stadium. Werden went on to double with a victory in the 1,600 as well. The May 10th track meet was just the first of several championships being decided in the Orange-Person Athletic Conference, which comprises the middle school teams in two counties. Baseball got started Monday, May 12, at the home fields of the four higher seeds, with first-round games including Southern Roxboro going against OPAC south division champ Smith.

The championship finals of baseball will be played May 14 at Culbreth Middle School. Boys lacrosse will also be decided at Culbreth, soccer at Phillips Middle School and softball at Gravelly Hill in southern Hillsborough.
