Playoffs in the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department's Adult Softball league begins this week, with East Chapel Hill Rotary and Active Edge as the top seeds in their respective divisions.
ECH Rotary picked up a forfeit from Partners in Health on Sunday and ended softball's regular season at 13-3 in the Chapel Hill D League. It has a bye in the tournament's first round and will meet the winner of a first-round game between ninth-seeded Flying Burrito and No. 8 Partners in Health.
Jackson Media edged the Chapel Hill Braves 10-9 on the last day to leave both teams at 12-4, but the Braves won the tiebreaker to get their tournament's second seed. (Jackson Media's forfeit June 15 to the Braves indeed proved costly.)
The Braves don't play until the second round, when they face the winner between McCauley Street and UUMC.
Likewise, No. 3 Jackson Media and No. 6 Sutton's Drug Store skip on to the second, where they will play for the right to meet the winner of the Braves-McCauley-UUMC bracket.
No. 4 Auto Logic and No. 5 Fuzzy Ducks also have first-round byes and play each other in the second round.
Active Edge (13-3) heads into the post-season as the No. 1 seed and has a bye in the first round of the five-team C League. AE will play its first game against the winner of a play-in game between A Life's Journey and The Mitchell Report. The other semifinal game pairs No. 2 Chapel Hill Air (11-5) and The No. 3-seeded Longshots (8-8).
Duo does well at AAU tournament
A pair of Chapel Hill golfers both recorded top-10 finishes in their age groups last weekend in the North Carolina AAU Championship at The Challenge in Graham. Michael Hocker was runner-up in the 14-under group, bouncing back from an opening round 86 to shoot 76 on Sunday and finish two strokes behind winner Phillip Kelley of Advance (at 122).
Aleem Rahman took eighth in the truncated 18-under competition. He carded an 82 during Saturday's hot and humid round.
Sunday, the younger gofers teed off in the morning, before showers began to pop up throughout the Piedmont. Only three groups of the 14-18 boys had completed nine holes as the lightening began. Heavy rain fell for an hour, with some hail mixed in, then a second system formed with dangerous winds along the I-40 corridor. After a 3-and-1/2-hour delay, the tournament was declared done with the rounds recorded.
