Earnest Price, a 1982 Orange High graduate and long-time middle school athletic director, is the new athletic director at Orange. Price has been teaching and coaching at Stanford Middle School in Hillsborough since 1989 and has been athletic director there the past 13 years.

Price said he would like to increase attendance at Orange athletic events and to get more young people involved in the program.

"Athletics are an integral part of high school," Price said. "Students learn leadership and responsibility and get lifelong role models."

Gregoris honored

John Burns of Cardinal Gibbons, Nick Gregoris of Chapel Hill and Justin Koren of Cary were senior All-American selections by "The Amateur Wrestling News." Burns was No. 3 on the list at 145 pounds, Gregoris was No. 8 at 152 and Koren No. 10 at 140. Gregoris, a three-time state champion, will wrestle at Missouri next year.

Big day for Adams

Landon Adams of Middle Creek had a day to remember last week while playing in the North Carolina vs. South Carolina Baseball Challenge in Conway, S.C.

Adams, a center fielder, made a diving catch in the seventh inning of a 3-1 victory over South Carolina.

"It probably was the defensive play of the series," said Jeremy Thompson, the Middle Creek baseball coach and the all-star game director for the N.C. Baseball Coaches. "Two on, up two and Landon comes up with a catch that keeps the game under control."

Moments after the game, the University of North Carolina offered Adams a baseball scholarship, which he accepted. To top it off, all this happened on his birthday. Just for good measure, the N.C. team went on to win the second game, 7-6.

Good wood at OHS

The Orange High Summer Baseball Team will host the Third Annual Orange Invitational Wood Bat Tournament on July 11-12, with teams from OHS, Raleigh Broughton, East Chapel Hill and Smithfield-Selma participating. On Friday night, a BBQ chicken dinner at the baseball field will help raise funds for the summer baseball teams. Plates will cost $6 and will include BBQ chicken, baked beans, boiled potatoes and drink.

Friday's games will be Smithfield-Selma vs. Broughton at 5 p.m. and East Chapel Hill vs. Orange at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's finals will include a third-place game at 5:30 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
