Three make All-CWS team

North Carolina sophomore All-Americas Dustin Ackley, Tim Fedroff and Alex White each earned a spot on the 2008 College World Series All-Tournament Team announced last week.

Ackley, who hit .522 (12-23) in Omaha, was named to the All-CWS team for the second straight year. Fedroff batted .476 (10-21) with a double, a triple and two RBI.

White earned all three wins in the CWS for Carolina and posted a 3.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. He struck out 12 and walked just four. White tossed seven strong innings in the Tar Heels' opening win over LSU and then earned wins in relief against LSU and Fresno State in back-to-back elimination games.

The Tar Heels' three selections were second to the five Bulldogs that were honored. Fresno's Tommy Mendoncz was named the Most Outstanding Player.

UNC finishes 14th in cup

The University of North Carolina posted a slightly disappointing 14th-place finish in the Sports Academy Directors' Cup, the all-sports competition that is handed to Stanford on an annual basis. Formerly called the Sears Cup, the competition awards points for the top 10 men's and top 10 women's NCAA finishes. Florida State was second-best from the ACC, followed by Virginia and Duke.

Carolina won the inaugural trophy in 1993, and has finished in the top five seven times since -- including the past two seasons. But despite this year's slip, UNC still claimed the top spot among Atlantic Coast Conference institutions for the 13th time out of 15 years.

Meanwhile, the award has lived in Palo Alto, Calif., ever since Carolina's triumph under John Swofford, with the Cardinal earning the honor 14 straight times.
