Basketball Camps in July

A few spots remain, especially for grades 3-4-5, in the Hoops at East Basketball Academy, says coach Ray Hartsfield. The 13th annual camp will be in two sessions at East Chapel Hill High School for rising third- through ninth-graders: July 7-11 and July 21-25. Hoops at East is a full day camp, running 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information, or to have a camp application mailed or e-mailed to your home, call 969-2482, ext. 250, or 919-638-5717.

The 4-C Basketball Camp (July 7-11 at Smith Middle School) and The Edge (July 21-25 at Chapel Hill High School) are also accepting registration. See Camps & Clinics, Page B2 in The Chapel Hill News on June 29.

CHAPEL HILL -- Chapel Hill High School has hired Tod Morgan of Goldsboro as the new basketball coach of the Tigers' boys team. He was scheduled to meet with the team and players' parents Wednesday night at the school.

Morgan compiled 123 career victories during stops at Cape Hatteras, Greene Central, New Bern and Goldsboro.

"He's the right fit at the right time with his North Carolina experience and contacts," Chapel Hill athletic director Ronnie Hayes said of Morgan. "He is very knowledgeable about basketball. He is the right man for the job."

Last fall, he took over a solid Goldsboro program and took the Cougars back to the NCHSAA playoffs, where they ended up 17-12 after falling to Jacksonville Northside in the sectional playoffs. His last New Bern team finished 17-9 in 2007 and earned the program's first post-season berth in 12 years.

"I've been blessed to be a lot of places and be around a lot of good coaches," Morgan said at the end of last season. "We've learned to do things the right way and we've probably learned more during losses."

Morgan replaces Paul Kieckbusch, whose teams finished 13-59 cumulatively in his three years at CHHS. The Tigers improved to 6-17 last season and won three conference games, but still failed to reach the state playoffs.

Kieckbusch will remain a tenured teacher at Chapel Hill, Hayes said, and his basketball camp will go on as planned for July.
