NOVI, Mich. -- Twenty-five SkipSations who qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics brought home 31 medals and 94 ribbons last weekend. More important to the athletes, coaches and family members who made the trip, they were able to exchange lots of stories, high fives, team pins and hugs.
The SkipSations fit in well among the 575 athletes from 39 teams, coming from as far away as Singapore and Australia to jump rope for nearly 48 hours over a four-day period.
But, as head coach Lucy Schimmelfing constantly reminded her team, they were there "to have a great time, demonstrate sportsmanship and enjoy the experience of competing with other world-class athletes."
SkipSations jumpers could be heard throughout the tournament saying things such as "good work, girls," when talking to competitors who had just completed their routines. It was not unusual to find SkipSations helping kids on other teams.
In the Individual competition, Anna Knapp won the all-around gold medal for 11-year-old girls by earning gold medals in both the speed-skipping and power-jumping events and a bronze medal in freestyle.
Megan Miller won the all-around silver for 9-year-old girls on the strength of a gold medal in power-jumping and a silver medal in speed-skipping.
In the 8-and-under girls age group, Haven Lochow received the all-around bronze medal and a silver medal in freestyle.
Also in the 8-and-under girls age group, Karis Dean earned a bronze in the speed-skipping event.
Other members of the team who received top-10 ribbons in individual events were: Hannah Camp, Anya Cocowitch, Leanne Joyce, Kristen Laubscher, Lyn Nelson, Andrew Norris, Jessica Nolting, Sam Orenstein, Maggie Poole, Liza Schimmelfing and Julia Sonis.
In pairs competition, Dean and Lochow won the 8-and-under all-around silver medal after winning a gold medal in speed-skipping and a silver medal in freestyle.
Leanne Joyce and Sarah Seagroves received a bronze for speed-skipping in the 9-10 age group.
The bronze medal for speed in the 13-14 age group went to Schimmelfing and Morgan Williams.
In addition to the Pairs medal winners, ribbons also were earned by: Cocowitch and Orenstein; Knapp and Nelson; Laubscher and Cinthia Praiswater; and Poole and Norris.
In Double Dutch, the team of Laubsher, Praiswater, Schmmelfing and Williams won the all-around silver medal in the 13-14 age group after winning gold in the speed-relay event and bronze in 3-person freestyle.
Camp, Knapp, Miller and Nelson earned a Double Dutch power jumping silver medal in the 12-and-under age group.
The team of Kata DeLima, Norris, Annie Poole and Maggie Poole also achieved top-ten finishes in their Double Dutch events.
