The prep athletics season gets underway officially this week with a full slate of football games.

None will be tougher than the Chapel Hill varsity's trip to Cedar Ridge. The Tigers, coming off one of their best years ever, must overcome the emotional trauma of losing senior defensive lineman Atlas Fraley.

Fraley died Aug. 12 of as-yet still unknown causes, found in his home hours after a preseason scrimmage. CHHS team officials have considered postponing this Friday's game, but no changes had been announced by Monday's deadlines for The Chapel Hill News.

Chapel Hill is still scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. Friday kickoff at Cedar Ridge in Hillsborough.

Other games Friday include Northwood at East Chapel Hill, Carrboro at Graham and Orange at Bartlett Yancey. Each of those starts at 7:30 p.m.

While the Tiger football team is out of town, the CHHS volleyball team will host its annual Chapel Hill Invitational Tournament. The invitational, played Friday and Saturday, will include East Chapel Hill and Cedar Ridge.

The Tigers won last year's tournament, marking only the second time they've out on top in the invitational that always features some of the best teams in the state in an early season test.

Saturday, Carrboro hosts its own Jaguar Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

Soccer got underway Tuesday night, with CHHS at Durham School of the Arts. East Chapel Hill's soccer team travels to Wilson on Saturday to play Greenville Rose in the annual Brittany Memorial event. Carrboro hosts Chatham Central in its first soccer match at 7 p.m. tonight.

Carrboro and East tennis also start up this week with non-conference matches, while CHHS hosts Person in a rare season-opener in PAC-6 play.

The new Carrboro field hockey team will take part in Saturday's Saint Mary's Jamboree in Raleigh, while defending state champion CHHS travels to Asheville for a 12:30 p.m. rematch of last year's state final.
