CHAPEL HILL -- As Week 2 in high school football unfolds Friday, the most notable game may be the one not played.

Most area teams are in action on the road, with East Chapel Hill (0-1) at former Five-County Conference rival Orange (1-0), Carrboro (0-1) at tough Burlington Cummings (0-1) in a Mid-State Conference game, and Cedar Ridge (0-1) heading north to Bartlett Yancey (0-1).

Chapel Hill (1-0) will not play this week, using an open date on its schedule to recover its bearings. The Tigers are still coping with the loss of senior lineman Atlas Fraley, who died unexpectedly on Aug. 12. Classes at CHHS started Monday and many student-athletes had to rehash the events of earlier this month with curious classmates.

"I have mixed feelings about an open date at this time," CHHS athletic director Ron Hayes said. "The team played Friday night and seemed to get back into a good rhythm. I almost wish they could just keep going at this point.

"But a break is almost always good. The team will have a chance to refocus and work on any mistakes of last week. I also hope they'll slow down for a minute and think about what's really important."

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Aug. 27 in Clemmons for a 15-year-old Winston-Salem Reynolds player who died early Sunday from a brain injury he suffered during a season-opening football game. Sophomore linebacker Matt Gfeller was injured in Friday night's game against Greensboro Page.

Reynolds coach Mike Propst said Gfeller was taken off life support Saturday night, hours after brain surgery late Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Propst, school administrators and two local church pastors met with the 33 varsity players last weekend. Propst said that the team will use this week to deal with grief and move forward.

"We have to get ourselves back together and be able to get through this," Propst told the Winston-Salem Journal. "Like anything in grief, there is a process, but each one of them are handling it their own way, and we will have to just help them through that."

No decision had been made about whether Reynolds will play East Forsyth on Friday as scheduled.

Fraley, a Chapel Hill High School senior, died hours after an early morning scrimmage on Aug. 12. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of Fraley's death.

CHHS opened its season last Friday with an emotional, 21-10 win at Cedar Ridge. With their next game Sept. 5 at Smithfield-Selma, a rematch of last year's second-round playoff game, the Tigers won't play their home-opener until Sept. 12 against Raleigh Broughton.
