UNC 11, SOUTHERN MISS 4

Tuesday, June 16

When it comes to naming the greatest hitters in College World Series history, the conversation now must include Dustin Ackley. UNC's junior first baseman went 5-for-6 on Tuesday and followed that Thursday night with a hit against Arizona State in what probably will be his final game. The No. 2 overall draft pick by the Seattle Mariners is now the CWS career leader in hits, with 28 in 14 CWS games. "I think everybody saw today what everybody on our team and myself have seen the last three years with Dustin Ackley," Carolina coach Mike Fox said Tuesday night. "It was an unbelievable performance, and we've seen that before from him day in and day out. He's one sensational player, and I'm glad the nation got to see a little bit of that today. We needed it." North Carolina eliminated the Golden Eagles (40-26) and sent Southern Mississippi coach Corky Palmer into retirement. Tuesday's win over Southern Mississippi was Mike Fox's 500th in 11 years as North Carolina's coach.

North Carolina coach Mike Fox met with his players for about 20 minutes after Thursday night's 12-5 elimination loss to Arizona State in the College World Series. He needed no apologies for keeping media memnbers waiting.

"I had a lot of young men who wanted to say a few words," Fox said. "I just want ed to focus on the whole season. We're not going to let tonight tarnish this."

North Carolina, which made it to the CWS a fourth straight year, finished 48-18.
