PICKUP SOCCER -- Chapel Hill High School will host pickup soccer games for teens every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the summer at the CHHS fields. You don't have to be on a team or attend Chapel Hill High to participate. All games will be supervised by a soccer coach, and CHHS will supply field cones, bibs, water, balls and injury ice. GODIVA TRACK -- Godiva's popular Summer Track Series gets underway at 7 p.m., rain or shine, every Wednesday through Aug. 5 at UNC's Belk Track in Chapel Hill. Those who complete 36 events over the 12-week series earn the coveted Godiva Ironman award. The events are free, but a $1 donation is appreciated.
THIS SUMMER:
GOVERNORS' GOLF -- The Governors Club, located south of Chapel Hill off Mt. Carmel Church Road, will host three top tournaments this summer, free and open to the public to attend as spectators. The club will host sectional qualifying for the USGA's Senior Open on June 29, and a qualifier for the CGA's Carolina Amateur on July 1. The new U.S. Kids Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 11.
EAST HOOPS -- The 14th annual "Hoops at East" Summer Basketball Academy has announced dates for this summers' two sessions: July 6-10 and July 20-24, operating 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day at East Chapel Hill High School, under the supervision of certified coaches. Hoops at East is a full day camp open to all students who will be entering grades 3-9 this fall. SKIPSATIONS! JUMP ROPE -- The Skipsations will offer three more summer camps at McDougle Elementary School's gym for boys and girls, ages 5-14. CHHS SOCCER -- The first session of CHHS Soccer camp, July 20-24, is designed for boys and girls advancing into grades 3-12, and instruction is aimed at improving individual tactics and ball skills. Players will be placed into appropriate groups for training. The fee is $100 per camper. The second session, July 27-31, for boys and girls in grades 7-12, is for those wishing to get in shape for their school or select teams. The fee is $75. Campers can expect light weight-training, running of the mile for time and intense, small-sided and full-field games. JAGUAR FOOTBALL -- Carrboro High School football will offer a youth camp from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 20-23, open to all youth ages 8-13. The cost of the camp is $85, and the fee will cover the cost of a camp T-shirt, awards and drinks. CARRBORO REC CAMPS -- Carrboro Recreation and the Triangle Futbol Club will work together to host a soccer day camp July 20-23. The half-day camp (8:30-11:30 a.m. on those dates) for ages 6-14 costs $95. The "mini-kicker" camp (8:30-9:30 a.m.) for ages 4-5 costs $35. www.trainglefc.org. These are just two of the summer sports camps being offered by the Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department. The offerings include: Ultimate Frisbee Camp for youth ages 10-15 on June 22-26; Basketball Camp June 29 through July 3 for ages 9-11; Field Hockey for youth ages 14-17 from June 29 through July 3 and for ages 10-13 July 13-17; and Volleyball for ages 10-13 July 20-24. CARRBORO HIGH BASEBALL -- The Jaguars will host their second annual baseball camp for boys 10-12 years old on July 27-31 at Carrboro High School. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The camp is limited to the first 40 registrants in order to provide as much individual attention as possible. Camp focus is on teaching the basic fundamentals of baseball, its rules, and on learning to play the game with confidence. There will be daily station work (2 stations per day), and players will receive a minimum of 80 swings per day (dry swings/tee work/soft toss/live pitching). Each day will include two scrimmages, and there will be daily competitions with prizes awarded. Registration fee is $95, and includes camp T-shirt, water bottle and Friday cook-out/pizza party. CARRBORO FALL SPORTS -- Volleyball classes for youth ages 10-1 are designed to introduce the fundamentals of the sport, and will take place on Sundays from Sept. 13 through Oct. 18, with sessions at 1-2:15 p.m. and 2:30-3:45 p.m. The fee is $47 per player. Signup is under way for a new Ultimate Frisbee League (games on Mondays and Wednesdays), with a fee of $33 per participant, -- and that includes a team T-shirt and a disc in the fee. Players will be drafted by teams after fall preseason games. Space is limited. Co-Rec softball (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) costs $625 per team, with $200 at registration. Ultimate Frisbee. CPFL FOOTBALL --Spots remain for Carrboro's Pee Wee (7-8), Mite (9-10) and Midget (11-12) football teams. (The player should be within the specified age range as of Aug. 1, and weight limits exist for all teams.) Registration is being accepted online via RecConnect at
www.townofcarrboro.org/RP or at the Century Center in Carrboro. The fee is $52 for Orange County residents, $91 for out-of-county residents. The Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department is a member of the Central Piedmont Football League, which comprises 20 organizations from Central North Carolina. Participants will begin practice Aug. 1, with games beginning in September and running through October.
C.L.A.S.S. SOCCER -- Class is back in session with the Carrboro Recreation Department's a Soccer C.L.A.S.S. (Children Learning Athletic Sports Skills) for kids and their parents. The program is designed for children 4 to 6 years old (as of the first class), with a goal of introducing the fundamentals of soccer to both the child and parent -- dribbling, trapping and shooting. Parent participation is a major part of this program. The program will be held on Saturdays (9-10 a.m.) from Sept. 12 through Oct. 17. The fee is $47 per child.
