It's 15 down and many more to go for Chapel Hill in summer basketball. To date, the Tigers club of Chapel Hill High School players put together by coach Tod Morgan has completed play in New Hanover's Toddy Fennell Jamboree, the Lee County High School Jamboree, and the Southern Nash Jamboree. The Tigers will play at least four more games in the High Point Andrews Jamboree this Friday through Sunday, and then return home for the climatic "Jammin on the Hill" tournament July 17-19 East Chapel Hill High School.

"We had another great weekend at the Southern Nash Jamboree," Morgan said recently. "We had a total of 18 guys participate, which is wonderful for the building of our men's basketball program."

In last weekend's tournament at Baily, CHHS beat host Southern Nash and Green Hope, then lost a tough one to Northern Nash and a one-pointer (50-49) to Bunn.

"Overall, we played hard and very well. I enjoyed watching our guys compete and really get after it," Morgan said.

Tigers who participated in the Southern Nash Jamboree included: James Manor, Oliver Musalem, Stephen Wistner, Brian Wistner, Daniel Watson, Denzel Ingram, Michael Thompson, Kyle Grant, Anthony Ebarb, Pierre Moore, Ishmael Alston, Andrew Cohen, Rashaad Morrow, Glenn Davis, Andrew Grant, Stephen Himmelberg, Khalid Salim and Garrett Young-Wright.

East Chapel Hill, under head coach Ray Hartsfield, opens play Thursday in the East Coast Invitational in Jacksonville. The Wildcats tip off at 4:30 p.m. against in-state rival Greensboro Dudley in a battle of former state champions; ECH continues pool play at 8 p.m. against North Mecklenburg. The ECI's round-robin play runs through Friday afternoon and then breaks into a seeded tournament that concludes Sunday.

Jamieson makes cut for CGA Amateur

Chapel Hill's Jeff Jamieson was among the 18 golfers who qualified for the CGA's 95th Carolinas Amateur Championship in sectional qualifying July 1 at the Governors Club. Jamieson carded 37 on both the front and back nine on the 7,018-yard layout designed by Jack Nicklaus to tie for 13th place in the one-day qualifier. His 2-over-par 74 was five strokes off the pace set by medalist Tripp Brizendine of Morrisville, who burned the front for a 32 and then coasted on in with a 69 total.

Alex Harris of Pittsboro was one stroke behind Jamieson, and Ryan Baucom, of Chapel Hill was one more in back of that with a 76 to just miss qualifying. Four others from Chapel Hill were in the field of 86 golfers who participated.

The annual Carolinas Amateur Championship will be contested July 8-12 at the Country Club of Charleston (S.C.)

That's Gilliam's GPA, not ERA

Former East Chapel Hill High School baseball player Rob Gilliam is among the 26 UNC Greensboro student-athletes who earned spots on the Spring Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced recently. The team included 320 student-athletes from 12 Southern Conference schools, representing the sports of men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field, baseball and softball. To be eligible, student-athletes had to own a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring semester.

Gilliam, a junior pitcher recently signed by the Oakland Athletics, sported a 3.28 GPA while majoring in political science.

Metros Soccer Camp continues

The Metros' camp series for boys and girls ages 8-15 will continue with week two July 13-16 at Chapel Hill High School Field. Each day's camp will run 8 a.m. to noon. Financial aid is available for selected youth. For more information call 929-1949 or email former UNC standout and Metros founder Gerry O'Donnell at msa21@earthlink.net/.

CLA hosts lacrosse mini-camp

The Carolina Lacrosse Academy will host a Summer Mini-Camp for girls, 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday, and Thursday, July 14-Aug. 13, at Cedar Falls Park, located across Weaver Dairy Road from East Chapel Hill High School. Instructors will include players Gina Allen (UNC '05) and Kara Fisher, (ECH '09/Syracuse '13). Registration costs $100. For more information, e-mail kfisher06@yahoo.com

Wallace signs with Boston Celtics

Boston fans are still undecided whether to cheer or groan at the news that former UNC basketball player Rasheed Wallace has been signed by the Celtics. Wallace's agent, Bill Strickland, told the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe on Sunday night that the 34-year-old forward wanted to call off meetings with the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks.

Wallace played the last six seasons with Detroit, where he won an NBA championship in 2004 but then appeared to sleepwalk through last season, growing disaffected from the Pistons and the Motor City. He'll be on a Celtics team loaded with veterans such as Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, and hoping to make at least one more title run. For that to happen, he'll need to produce the rebounds and defense he failed to show last year.

Wallace has averaged 15 points and 6.9 rebounds in 14 NBA seasons since leaving Chapel Hill. He averaged 12 points and 7.4 rebounds last season.
