CHAPEL HILL - Plenty of coaches would be happy to go 6-0 against their cross-town rival. After Friday night, it's doubtful any of them could possibly be happier than Issac Marsh.

The Chapel Hill High football coach dictated a 48-minute battle of field position against an undermanned East Chapel Hill squad, settling for a 14-7 victory in a game that was close on the scoreboard but lopsided in every other way.

Chapel Hill (1-4) out-gained the Wildcats 278-106 in total offense, had 12 first downs compared to East's four and won the time of possession battle 31:37 to 16:23. Of the Wildcats' eight drives in the game, only two featured first downs -- and both of those were extended only because of roughing-the-kicker penalties against the Tigers.

"Controlling the line of scrimmage is always important for us," said Marsh. "We wanted to control the ball and run down the clock as much as possible. Daniel Watson and Evan Jones did a great job in that for us tonight, and I was happy with that."

With the win, by the closest margin since East defeated CHHS 27-20 in 2003, the Tigers retain the Hodgin Cup for a sixth consecutive year. The trophy, sponsored by the Chapel Hill News, is named after Bill Hodgin, the former Chapel Hill High football coach and the first-ever athletic director at East Chapel Hill High.

Chapel Hill now leads the series 11-3.

The Wildcats' 21st consecutive loss was even more bitter than usual. With 15 seniors on the roster facing a winless Chapel Hill team, the Wildcats (0-5) would have loved nothing more than to pick up their first home win in four years against their archrivals. Instead, they're now ensured to go two full calendar years without a victory; the 2nd anniversary of their last win (Sept. 21, 2007, against Riverside) arrives Monday.

"It's not hard for me to get enthusiastic because of the kids," said Wildcats coach Darian Harris. "They show up every practice ready to compete. If they're not giving up, then I'm not giving up."

The Tigers got off to an equally enthusiastic start in Friday's game after Kyle Duffy returned the opening kickoff 70 yards to the East 27-yard line. Shortly after, Evan Jones punched in a touchdown on a fullback dive with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter. East's Stephen Augustine blocked the extra point to keep the Tiger lead at 6-0.

East appeared to go three-and-out on the next series, but punter Ethan Keyserling drew a roughing-the-kicker penalty for a new set of downs. East tailback Mark Farrish eventually scored his first varsity touchdown on a two-yard scamper. Thomas Moore's extra point gave East a 7-6 lead, the first time East held an advantage against the Tigers since 2003.

From that point forward, East fought an uphill battle.

The Wildcats had one first down the rest of the game, and crossed the 50-yard line once more. Their average starting field position their own 20-yard line.

Yet Chapel Hill's game-winning score in the second quarter could have easily gone nowhere. The Tigers were set to punt after a supposed three-and-out, but the Wildcats were flagged for too many men on the field, giving the Tigers a first down.

"I was calling for a time out because I wanted to change one player," said Harris. "But the official said he couldn't hear me."

Chapel Hill made the Wildcats pay. Backup Quarterback Stephen Wistner, used exclusively during long-distance situations, threw to starting quarterback Winston Washington on a 12-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown. Washington then somehow threaded a needle to Russell Suitt for a two-point conversion and a 14-7 CHHS lead, despite perfect coverage from Thomas Moore and Augustine.

Red Wolves nip OHS

Jake Geary's five-yard TD run in overtime, followed by a crucial PAT kick by Hunter Moran, lifted Cedar Ridge past arch-rival Orange, 28-27, Friday night at Red Wolves Stadium. Orange (1-3) answered in its OT drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Drevis Torain, but the Panthers missed on the conversion. Orange had a 21-7 lead after two quarters, thanks to touchdown runs by Torain and Thomas Jones and then a 5-yard pass from Freddie Blanks to Jones with 47 seconds left before halftime. Cedar Ridge fought back with touchdown runs of 7and 15 yards by Brent Burnette, tying the game midway through the fourth quarter at 21-21 with a 2-point conversion run by Josh Evarts.
