DURHAM - On the Friday night he was named homecoming king, Riverside's Chauncey Burgess ran for 137 yards and a touchdown while fellow senior Phillip Jones added 103 yards and two touchdowns as Riverside held off East Chapel Hill 28-17 at Wrenn Stadium.
Not that East didn't have its moments. The Wildcats had its first second-half lead of the season when sophomore quarterback Drew Davis threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Aquez Willis with 6:20 left in the third quarter; that gave East a 17-14 advantage. Riverside(3-3, 1-0 in the PAC-6 Conference) stormed right back on the ensuing drive to take the lead for good, with Burgess and Jones alternating carries out of the Pirates one-back set. Burgess finished the 12-play, 80-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run.
"Their offensive line stepped up," said East Coach Darian Harris, whose team has now lost 23 straight games. "They won the battle up front and pushed our guys around a little bit. We knew going in that Chauncey was a great back and he did a good job tonight."
East's (0-7, 0-1) last victory came at Riverside on Sept. 21, 2007. Part of what made that win so special was because it was so unexpected. The Wildcats played without their two top quarterbacks; one was injured, the other was honoring Yom Kippur.
There were similar themes going into Friday night. The undersized Wildcats knew going in they would be playing without three starters along the offensive line, as Chandler Zirkle and Robert Warnock suffered injuries during the week, while freshman starter T.J. Johnson elected to leave the team.
Nonetheless, East came forward with their finest offensive performance of the season. Coming into the game averaging just 121 yards per game, the Wildcats finished with 271 yards. Davis finished 13-of-24 for 271 yards, registering career highs in passing yards and completion percentage.
"He did a great job managing the offense," said Harris. "We talk to our guys about getting better every week, and you can see the progression. From Drew at quarterback to our offensive line to the receivers to the running back, we're getting there."
Riverside prolonged two East scoring drives with personal foul penalties, and the Pirates registered a jaw-dropping 158 yards in penalties.
Davis' improvement at quarterback was never more apparent on the opening drive of the second quarter, where he threw a 37-yard strike to Willis. After finding tight end Alex Moore for a 18-yard completion, Davis ran in a quarterback sneak to tie the game 7-7 with 6:58 remaining in the first half.
Riverside led 14-7 at the half. East fought with a 23-yard field goal from Thomas Moore to start the third quarter, preceding Davis' bomb to Willis on a one-play drive.
The Wildcats get next week off before facing winless Northern Durham for homecoming.

Omar's second TD reception and Sam Cooper point-after kick early in the fourth quarter tied the game at 14-14. McClain's 21-yard run with 8:46 left to play put the Jaguars (3-3) up for good. After a late Reagan field goal of 17 yards by sophomore Brian Saakvitne, the Jags were able to run out the last 3 minutes with two first downs that ate up the clock.
Carrboro ends a three-game road stretch with next Friday's game at South Granville (4-2).
