CHAPEL HILL If someone had remembered to bring enough place cards for all the runners, Saturday's inaugural Orange County Cross-Country Championships would have been just about perfect.

Ninth-grader Grace Morken of Carrboro High School won the girls' 5K race in 19:08, followed in sequence by five Chapel Hill High School runners in places 2-3-4-5-6: Tristin Van Ord (9:12), Sarah Jane Kerwin (19:29), Ahna Weeks (19:44), Alexa Young (19:50) and Lindsay Savelli (19:52).

Morken shadowed Van Ord for more than 4 kilometers then made her move and out-kicked her to the finish.

"Morken is a good runner," CHHS coach Ron Olsen said. "I think she taught Tristin a good lesson about breaking away that I don't think she'll forget anytime soon."

Morken ran a 19:04 a week before at Charlotte's McAlpine Park to take second place in the 3-A Division race at the 35th Wendy's Invitational. She and teammates Laura Hamon (6th place, 19:56) and Frankie Perone (12th, 20:26) helped Carrboro finish ahead of quality 3-A teams like Marvin Ridge and Charlotte Catholic in that event.

"They'll win the 2-A (NCHSAA) championship," Olsen said. "I don't see anyone in the 2-A who can catch them, barring injury or illness."

Saturday at the CHHS course, Van Ord, Kerwin, Weeks, Young and Savelli all ran season-best times to help the Chapel Hill girls win the team OCXC title with 20 points to Carrboro's 46. Van Ord and Young are ninth-graders. Orange's girls finished third Saturday with 66 points. Neither Cedar Ridge nor East Chapel Hill opted to enter enough runners to score in the girls' race.

Carrboro has the state 2-A's top-rated girls team and second-ranked boys. Both of Orange's team's are ranked in the state's top 10. Chapel Hill's boys and girls team's are both ranked No. 1 in 3-A.

Led by Will Bunch's winning time of 16:20, the CHHS boys were even more dominant in their race, with an almost perfect 17 points to 63 for Orange, followed by Carrboro (70) and Cedar Ridge. Again, East opted not to enter a team.

Chapel Hill's Asher Colburn-Hertzberg (16:21) was second and Brad Viles (16:23) third. Kyle Villemain (16:25), Liam Stott (16:34), Jacob Hoerger (16:36) and Danny Philips (17:04) finished in order 5-6-7-8.

"I thought it'd be a good scrap, and it was," Olsen said. "We did a good job racing all the way through."

Bunch and Colburn-Hertzberg set season-best times, as did Chris Reeder (16:47), Mitch McLeod (16:48), Tima Karginov (17:17), Oskar Marzalek (17:25), Ryan Mumper (17:40) and Adam Sutter (18:04) in the boys' JV race, and Pasangi Perera (20:51) in the girls' JV race.

Timing was crucial for the OCXC in more ways than one. Because CHHS hosted SAT sessions Saturday morning Olsen ("I didn't know about the SATs when I scheduled it,") worked with other coaches to switch the time to the afternoon.

"Some of the runners took the SATs, but I think most of the kids the kids enjoyed getting to sleep in," Olsen said. "It was nice for once not having to get up for some out-of-town event in the morning."

Despite some unseasonably warm temperatures, the CHHS course was in good shape.

"We got everyone in and all the times recorded and everyone out of here about 20 minutes before rain started to fall," Olsen said. "If I had thought to bring enough cards, it would have just about perfect. I'll remember that next time."

Chapel Hill will host the Carolina-Nine Conference championship meet nest Tuesday and then will serve as host again for the NCHSAA Mideast 3-A meet Oct. 31 at WakeMed Park in Cary for what will be a full day of running. The ACC men and women will run at WakeMed that morning, followed by the NCHSAA girls and boys 3-A and 4-A regionals.

The NCHSAA state championships will be Nov. 7 at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.
