Cyclones edge PhillipsSmith Middle School firmed up its leadership of OPAC football with an 18-12 overtime win Wednesday over Phillips in game played at Culton-Peerman Stadium. The Falcons (3-2) were up 12-0 at halftime before Smith's
Quole Wilson sparked a comeback with touchdown runs of 32 and 20 yards in the second half.
"I had to explain to the guys that, when you play rivalry games, then you have to bring everything that you have, " Smith coach John French said. "I think they got the message during halftime, because they started flying around and playing with passion in the second half."
Smith (5-1) thought it had a 14-12 lead with 2:30 to play after Wilson hit his tight end for a 2-point conversion, but the score was called back on an illegal-formation penalty. Phillips drove the ball down to the Smith 35-yard line with 40 seconds left before getting stopped on downs.
The Cyclones stoned Phillips when the Falcons got four tries from the 10 in the first overtime, then, on Smith's third down in OT, Wilson passed to
Aaron Smith for the game-winning score.
Wilson again the topped the 100-yard mark rushing, caught a pass for 40 yards and completed the 8-yard TD to Smith.
Devon Gattis and Smith led Smith's defense with 10 tackles apiece.
"I told (Phillips coach
Eugene Privott) that it was going to be a shame that either of us was going to have to lose that game, " French said. "Coach Privott came out with a great game plan."
Phillips next will play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at McDougle Middle School. Smith's has an open date before it plays Oct. 28 at McDougle.
